First media job: Freelance reporter for the Ukrainian Weekly newspaper

Best Gazette memory: "The Elbow Room is charging for water," though not the happiest headline for poor students, actually ended up in a nice twist for me.
For those not be familiar with the long gone Elbow Room, it was a bar located three floors below the Gazette office with big swiveling lounge chairs and
a big screen TV which was always miraculously turned in to the Young & the Restless or the Gulf War. Students would go there at lunch time between classes
with their own sandwiches and would just order water — a thrifty thing to do but the grilled cheese/Caesar salad combo was a great alternative any day
of the week for just $1.10. The bar manager announced this morsel just before leaving for vacation to Florida and I had to call him long distance to get
the facts. Wouldn't you like to be called by a student reporter on your vacation, especially about the price of water?
After the story was published, I went out for drinks downtown with some friends and we were joined by their friends who hadn't met me before. Conversation
was flowing and then someone said, "Did you know the Elbow Room is charging for water?" My friend Mike pointed to me and said, "Yes, Maria was the one who told you
that in today's Gazette." I was thrilled.
