Self-Care Ideas for Each Type of Intelligence

by Maria Koropecky, Ammolite Wellness Coach

When you hear the word “intelligent,” what comes to mind?

Brainy, whiz kid, genius, prodigy, brilliant, smart, or my personal favourite, rocket scientist…

I always think, “good at math” first but I know there’s way more to intelligence than being able to ace a calculus exam.

Chances are that if you weren’t good at “reading and writing and ‘rithmetic” (as the old song goes), you felt like something was wrong with you and school was a chore that you had to endure until you could escape.

Sadly, many people slip through the cracks and never graduate even though they’re smart and brilliant in their own way.

What if our education system nurtured and celebrated kids with different intelligences other than the traditional, linear thinking ones?

What if kids with a knack for growing vegetables in a garden, or reading other people’s energy, or inventing new games to play, had room to explore their talents in the classroom, too?

In 1983, American psychologist, Howard Gardener, described 9 types of intelligence:

  • Naturalists (like animals and plants)
  • Musicals (like playing with sounds)
  • Logical-Mathematicals (are good with numbers and problem solving)
  • Existentials (will ask life’s big questions)
  • Interpersonals (are people-people)
  • Bodily-Kinesthetics (are physically coordinated)
  • Linguistics (like playing with words)
  • Intrapersonals (are self-aware)
  • Spatials (can visualize in 3D)

If any of these intelligences resonate with you, I’ve come up with a list of self-care activities that you can weave into your life – starting today – that will play to your strengths and preferences and will be like music to your ears!

Honouring and understanding your own intelligences and ways of being and of perceiving the world, is empowering!

And if you happen to stumble upon a self-care activity and a career that speaks directly to your intelligence, you’ll feel like you’ve hit the jackpot and you’ll be able to soar to new heights!

1. Naturalist Intelligence

Naturalists relish interacting with the natural world and have an affinity for plants, animals, rocks, and Mother Earth.

Good Careers: Botanist, Chef, Geologist, Naturalist, Veterinarian, Wilderness Guide

Self-Care Ideas: going on a nature walk, wearing crystal jewellery, petting a cat or dog

Naturalists have a way of communicating with wildlife.

2. Musical Intelligence

Musical geniuses have rhythm! They work with sound and can create emotional responses by changing notes, pitch, rhythm, timbre, and the tone of a song. They’re also sensitive listeners and can pick up on nuances others may miss.

Good Careers: composers, conductors, folio artists, musicians, performers, rock stars, song writers

Self-Care Ideas: going to a concert, listening to music, writing poetry, singing in a choir, playing an instrument

3. Logical-Mathematical Intelligence

Logical-mathematical intelligence is the ability to solve problems by coming up with theories then calculating, quantifying, and figuring out the number sequences that work. Math is the language of the Universe and it helps us to perceive relationships, connections, and patterns and it brings abstract concepts to life.

Good Careers: accountants, bakers, computer programmers, detectives, entrepreneurs, financial advisors, inventors, mathematicians, realtors, scientists.

Self-Care Ideas: Working on a crossword puzzle, reading a murder mystery book, organizing a collection

4. Existential Intelligence

Existential Intelligence is about asking the deep questions of human existence like: What is the meaning of life? Where do we go when we die? and How did this whole she-bang start?

Good Careers: astronomers, life coaches, monks, nuns, philosophers, priests, rabbis, spiritual teachers, writers, yogis

Self-Care Ideas: Looking at the stars in the night sky, meditating, journaling, travelling to sacred places

5. Interpersonal Intelligence

People with Interpersonal intelligence are good with people and have the ability to connect and communicate well with others. People-people are the leaders among us, know how to read feelings and motives, and are good at influencing others.

Good Careers: actors, life coaches, politicians, social workers, teachers, talk show hosts

Self-Care Ideas: hosting a party, putting on a play, talking with friends, teaching concepts to another person

6. Bodily-Kinesthetic Intelligence

People with Bodily-Kinesthetic intelligence are very aware of how their body moves through space and time. It’s about having hand-eye coordination, dexterity, and balance. It’s also about learning by doing and feeling.

Good Careers: athletes, dancers, magicians, massage therapists, personal trainers, surgeons

Self-Care Ideas: dancing, getting or giving a massage, playing a game of tennis

7. Linguistic Intelligence

People with Linguistic intelligence have the gift of the gab and also write well. They have the ability to express ideas and concepts in meaningful ways. They like communicating with all kinds of people and playing with words – for Linguistics, puns are fun!

Good Careers: journalists, life coaches, novelists, poets, public speakers, standup comics

Self-Care Ideas: journaling, reading, telling stories, writing a blog post

Journalling is very therapeutic. Photo by Samantha Hurley from Burst

8. Intra-personal Intelligence

Intra-personal intelligence is a personal awareness. It’s the ability to understand and appreciate your own thoughts and feelings and by extension, the human condition.

Good Careers: astronomers, life coaches, monks, nuns, philosophers, priests, rabbis, spiritual teachers, writers, yogis

Self-Care Ideas: meditation, reading, taking a yoga class, travelling, writing

9. Spatial Intelligence

Spatial intelligence is the ability to visualize in three dimensions. People with this intelligence are the artists among us and they can rotate an object in their imagination and see it from all angles, as if they’re physically holding it in their hands.

Good Careers: architects, artists, designers, engineers, painters, pilots, sailors, sculptors

Self-Care Ideas: Day dreaming, doing a jigsaw puzzle, drawing pictures, play a game of pool, walking a labyrinth

sketching heart in book.
Artists help us see new perspectives!

How many of these intelligences do you recognize in yourself?

Hopefully my summaries of the 9 Intelligences will help you gain some personal awareness of what makes you special and unique in our diverse world.

I’m sure you’ll find that you have an affinity for more than one of these intelligences and they each complement each other in some way.

The truth is, you can be successful in life with any combination of these intelligences.

Don’t ever let anyone else make you feel bad or wrong about your unique talents and gifts and your way of processing information! The world needs what you have to offer, so shine your light!

Whenever you feel down, keep this in mind: If we were all just good at math, the world would be a really boring place!

Keep Art and Jim in school!

My Thoughts on “Footprints: The Path of Your Life” Movie

by Maria Koropecky, Ammolite Wellness Coach

I’ve just realized that in two short months, I’ll be flying to Spain to walk the Camino. There’s still so much to do to prepare!

"Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you've imagined," Henry David Thoreau

Although I’m not yet physically on the trail, I feel I’ve already started my pilgrimage.

I’ve been talking with many people who have already walked the Camino and on Monday, perhaps the first person to plant the seed of going on this journey for me, one of my friends, Alexander, came over to watch the movie, “The Way” with me and my mom.

My mother had also invited Caroline, who had also walked the Camino, and Peter and his mother, who were interested in seeing the movie.

Well, somehow, we had gotten off to a rough start. We couldn’t get the DVD player to work and once we put the disc into an old laptop, not everybody could hear the dialogue and see the screen. Our old technology just wasn’t working and it was an exercise in frustration!

Finally, we decided to switch gears and watch another movie on the same subject on Netflix called, “Footprints: The Path of Your Life.”

Footprints is a documentary that follows a group of 10 men while they walk the Camino de Santiago with their Parish Priest.

I suppose fighting with the technology and then figuring out that we could watch another movie on another platform was a lesson in not forcing something to go in a certain way and letting another option – a better one – emerge instead.

Once we made that choice, the energy in the room calmed down somewhat.

As it turned out, Footprints was actually the better choice for us to watch because it was more “realistic” of what I could expect on my journey, according to Alexander and Caroline.

In the beginning, each of the men were really struggling with their own fears and challenges and sadly, a few of the men in the group had to bow out and leave early.

That’s what happens with any new, ambitious project – stuff comes up. We have all of the best of intentions but somehow, all of this emotional baggage that has been buried deep down over a lifetime, gets stirred up. That’s the struggle! It’s how we deal with all our stuff that we’ve collected over the years that will make our break us.

The fear and the obstacles are saying, “I know you want to get to Santiago de Compostela, [for example] but here’s what you have to deal with first, and once you face this garbage head on and clear it out of the way, the world will be your oyster and you can be, do, or have whatever you want!”

For some of the men in the movie, it was too much too soon. The stuff that came up for them was too much to bear. I know they gave it their best and it wasn’t an easy decision to make to not finish. I hope they have a chance to try again and succeed.

But after a couple of weeks and many miles under their belts, the remaining men got a rhythm and got stronger.

By the end of their 500 mile, 40-day journey, they were laughing and dancing and walking barefoot! It was beautiful to watch the men go through their spiritual transformation!

I think the turning point occurred for the group after they saw the cross of Jesus with their own eyes – which would have been amazing! – and then suddenly the men were inspired to work together as a group, not letting the weakest fall behind.

That’s the choice we all have – either we continue to carry our heavy baggage that is weighing us down and give up on our dreams, or we face our challenges and let them go and leave them at the side of the road and move on and help others along their way as well.

Going on a pilgrimage gives us the opportunity to release our rocks and burdens, once for all!

And in the same spirit, working with a Wellness Coach like me would also be valuable.

Both coaching and pilgrimages open up new options that we may not have seen before (like watching a different movie at the last minute like we had) and give us the chance to make new choices and start fresh.

If we can make it through that initial turbulence and interference, we’ll be stronger for the rest of the journey.

That’s where the expression, “what doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger” comes from!

And with wellness coaching, there’s extra support during the rough patches so you don’t have to travel alone.

Have you ever noticed that fear is built into interference? Some people let the fear interfere and stop them from experiencing a blissful miracle because whatever came up was just too much. The turbulence was too scary and the plane was shaking too hard!

Meanwhile, other people on the same flight will just push through and keep going and make it through with flying colours.

Man jumping fence.

So I asked myself, “What kind of person am I?” Will I let fear stop me in my tracks as I’m attempting a challenging leg on my journey? Will I let those excuses block my path and give me an out to turn around and go home?

Or will I rise to the challenge and dig deep and keep moving?

That’s why I think the pilgrimage has already started for me. The more emotional baggage I can release before I physically set foot on the Camino, the easier and the lighter the walk will be.

I’m not going to let potential turbulence keep me from getting on that flight or let fear stop me from living my best life!

Buen Camino, Maria

Wherever you are on the planet, on this 21st day of June, I’d like to wish you a beautiful, sunshiny day, and a fun, busy, and productive summer!

Today is the day in the Northern Hemisphere when we get the most daylight hours in the whole year and it just inspires everyone to wake up, stretch, and go outside!

Sunshine and summertime go hand in hand. Sunshine brings golden yellow light into our lives and the colour of yellow is all about personal power, confidence, and ambition!

Tapping into cheery yellow energy, via standing in the sunshine and our own solar plexus, helps connect us to joy, belly laughs, our gut instinct, and the Divine Masculine.

Summer is the time of year to go out there and take action towards your goals and dreams!

Let the long, bright days of the summer season inspire you to go to work and be seen in the light of day for the talented person you are. Be confident expressing your creativity as you earn a living. Go ahead and work up a sweat, get in shape, and get a healthy tan!

The sun shines on all of us equally!

Alternatively, if we don’t have enough sunshiny, yellow, summertime energy in our lives, we may experience low self-esteem, poor vision, a big Ego, difficulty going to work, a hard time making decisions, problems with digestion, or anger or control issues.

If that’s the case, you can remedy those issues quickly by choosing self-care activities that will help you feel full of energy and confidence and will get you out of the house and out in the world at large!

To inspire you to go outside already, please enjoy the photos I took of sunshine in all of its glory when I went to Sooke Potholes with my brother and nephew on June 15, 2019.

Ultimately, summer is the time of year to make hay while the sun shines!

So go out there and get busy! It’s your time to shine! You can rest all you want in winter. 🙂

Love this Song! Thanks, Natasha!

Unwritten, Natasha Bedingfield

I am unwritten, can’t read my mind, I’m undefined
I’m just beginning, the pen’s in my hand, ending unplanned
Staring at the blank page before you
Open up the dirty window
Let the sun illuminate the words that you could not find
Reaching for something in the distance
So close you can almost taste it
Release your inhibitions

Feel the rain on your skin
No one else can feel it for you
Only you can let it in
No one else, no one else
Can speak the words on your lips
Drench yourself in words unspoken
Live your life with arms wide open
Today is where your book begins
The rest is still unwritten
Oh, oh, oh

I break tradition, sometimes my tries, are outside the lines
We’ve been conditioned to not make mistakes, but I can’t live that way
Staring at the blank page before you
Open up the dirty window
Let the sun illuminate the words that you could not find
Reaching for something in the distance
So close you can almost taste it
Release your inhibitions

Feel the rain on your skin
No one else can feel it for you
Only you can let it in
No one else, no one else
Can speak the words on your lips
Drench yourself in words unspoken
Live your life with arms wide open
Today is where your book begins
The rest is still unwritten

Staring at the blank page before you
Open up the dirty window
Let the sun illuminate the words that you could not find
Reaching for something in the distance
So close you can almost taste it
Release your inhibitions

Feel the rain on your skin
No one else can feel it for you
Only you can let it in
No one else, no one else
Can speak the words on your lips
Drench yourself in words unspoken
Live your life with arms wide open
Today is where your book begins
The rest is still unwritten
The rest is still unwritten
The rest is still unwritten
Oh, yeah, yeah

Songwriters: Danielle A. Brisebois / Natasha Anne Bedingfield / Wayne Steven Jr Rodrigues

Unwritten
“The rest is still unwritten…”

I’ve adopted Unwritten as my own personal theme song for this year. It’s so upbeat and fun and inspiring and the video makes me smile.

I’m going to sing this song to myself whenever I like! Maybe even dance a little, too!

I’ve always liked this song, first released in 2004, even though it made me a little uncomfortable — I didn’t quite get it — but now some of the lines really jump out at me.

“Open up the dirty window” — it’s like, let some fresh air into your past and let it breathe.

“So close you can almost taste it” — I feel like I’m on the verge of a breakthrough and it’s within reach.

“Release your inhibitions” — that’s about accepting yourself as you are and just going for it.

“No one else can feel it for you” — you can’t look outside of yourself for validation or live vicariously through other people.

“Live your life with arms wide open” — that’s about surrender.

“Today is where your book begins” — You can only create from here, the present moment.

“The rest is still unwritten” — Endless possibilities.

Wow. That’s a really powerful song!

Wouldn’t it be wonderful to be able to live your life as your most authentic and vulnerable self — no shame, no inhibitions, no fear, and be able to connect with other living beings on a genuinely deep level — no egos, no games, no agendas — just being and letting things unfold naturally?

How refreshing is that?

The Top 1970’s TV Shows that Influenced my Life

On Friday nights, back in the 1970’s, when I was a kid growing up in Nova Scotia, I used to love opening up the hide-a-bed, popping a bowl of popcorn, choosing a bottle of pop from the Poppe Shoppe, and watching the TV show, Donny & Marie.

top 1970's tv shows that influenced my life.

Maybe you can relate to the days when TV’s were:

  • square,
  • when they were either black & white or colour,
  • when they had rabbit ears that never quite sat in the right place for best reception,
  • when you had to turn a chunky dial to change channels,
  • when remote controls were a luxury and some even attached to the TV with a chord,
  • when there were only three major networks,
  • when there was only one TV in the house, and
  • your parents said, “Don’t sit too close to the TV or you’ll hurt your eyes.”

If you can remember those days, you’re probably a Gen-Xer (born between 1961 and 1981) like me.

When I think back on all of the TV shows I used to watch when I was a kid, I’m struck by how inspiring many of them were.

I have a CD of TV show theme songs which I listen to every now and then when I need a little pick me up. How can you not feel better when you hear, “Who can turn the world on with her smile…” or “Well, we’re movin’ on up…”?

Yes, listening to music is part of practicing self-care and I like to call it, “Music and Sound Therapy.”

The theme song lyrics are really empowering, especially for women, who were breaking new ground in those days and the messages are just as powerful today!

I believe these TV shows from the 1970’s shaped my values and my dreams and expanded my ideas of what was possible for me to do in my life!

My Favourite 1970’s TV Shows

  1. Donny & Marie
  2. the Carol Burnett Show
  3. the Mary Tyler Moore Show
  4. the Brady Bunch
  5. Wonder Woman
  6. the Bionic Woman
  7. Charlie’s Angels
  8. Happy Days
  9. Laverne & Shirley
  10. The Love Boat
  11. Bewitched
  12. Little House on the Prairie

I know these TV shows might be a little cheesy and campy in today’s world, but that’s part of their charm. I, personally, appreciate their wholesome inclinations.

As you may have noticed, these TV shows, in their own way, are all about striving to have a better life, regardless of your humble beginnings.

All it takes is a little love, creativity, imagination, resourcefulness, smarts, physical fitness, a sense of adventure, a sense of humour, and close friends and family!

How about you? What are some of your favourite TV shows from your childhood? Please leave a comment and share your memories.

If you also watched and enjoyed many of the TV shows I mentioned (though of course there are many more) when you were in elementary school, please contact me.

Perhaps I can help you navigate this next chapter of your life as you approach perimenopause and menopause. Yes, Gen-Xers are currently in our 40’s and 50’s and that’s worth celebrating!

Let’s continue to carry the torch of empowerment and keep running the good race!

Coaching isn’t just for athletes anymore

More and more people are hiring coaches like Life Coaches, Executive Coaches, Business Coaches, Career Coaches, Book Writing Coaches, Voice Coaches, Relationship Coaches, Dating Coaches, Spiritual Coaches, Health & Wellness Coaches, and the list goes on and on, to help them improve some aspect of their life.

But does coaching really work?

Yes, I believe coaching works.

Thanks to a study from the International Coach Federation, (ICF), conducted in 2015, there are plenty of statistics that prove the effectiveness of coaching.

4 Results from Coaching

  1. 80% of clients improved their self-confidence
  2. 73% of clients improved their relationships
  3. 72% of clients improved their communication skills
  4. 67% of clients improved their work-life balance.

5 Benefits from Coaching

  1. Increased confidence and self-esteem
  2. Improved communication skills
  3. Better personal relationships
  4. Stronger interpersonal skills
  5. Enhanced work performance.

Also according to this survey:

99% of clients who hire a coach are satisfied and
96% of clients would hire a coach again.

This particular study shows that people are indeed benefitting from working with a coach.

Imagining Your Future Is Easier Than You Think!

by Maria Koropecky, Spiritual Wellness Coach

“I am enough of an artist to draw freely upon my imagination. Imagination is more important than knowledge, for knowledge is limited, whereas imagination encircles the world,” ~ Albert Einstein (1929)

Thank you, Albert Einstein for saying, “Imagination is more important the knowledge” because if you can imagine it, it means you’re more than halfway there!

In all of my wellness coaching conversations, I always ask my clients, “What would you like to be, do, have, or give?” or “What would you like to create?” It’s a question that looks to the future (rather than the past) and allows my coaching clients to imagine a future that will light them up.

Answers can be as varied as, “I’d like to write a New York Times bestseller,” or “I want to travel and live in another country for awhile,” or “I’d like to marry the love of my life,” or “I’d like to open a wellness centre,” or “I’d like to live in my oceanfront dream home,” or even, “I’d like to win the lottery!”

oceanfront dream home in Sidney, BC.
Sidney OceanView Home – Millionaire Lottery Grand Prize 2018/2019.

We live in a miraculous universe that is filled with infinite possibilities and we can literally create whatever we want in the grand scheme of things! Once we’re able to voice our imagined future in a clear sentence, it means we’ve already tapped into, and have become aware of, the existence of a possibility. Now it’s an option that we can choose, if we want! This is exciting!

I know saying we have access to infinite possibilities at any given moment sounds fishy and far-fetched but it’s true! It all starts with a gift we all have — our imagination!

Imagination is the key to creativity and in order for something to be created, it has to start off as a thought or idea in someone’s imagination first!

With that said, I had a chance to play with this idea a little bit over this past weekend by going on a tour of a million-dollar, ocean view dream home in Sidney by the Sea, BC. Talk about imagination!

Sidney grand prize millionaire lottery home.

This 4,551 sq/ft, oceanfront, west coast contemporary design home with five bedrooms and five bathrooms is located at 1686 Lands End Road in Sidney, BC, just North of Victoria, on the edge of Vancouver Island.

Just imagine yourself sitting outside in your backyard with the love of your life, gazing at the ocean and the starry night sky, contemplating the mysteries of the Universe!

The Sidney Millionaire Lottery Grand Prize Package also includes:

  • over $75,000 in a furniture credit,
  • a 2019 Jaguar F-Type convertible, and
  • $100,000 cash!

The Sidney package is worth over $3 million CAD!

Millionaire Lottery Tickets are on sale now!
2 for $100, 5 for $175, 10 or $250 and 25 for $500.

Now that you’re aware of the Sidney Millionaire Lottery Grand Prize Package and you’re thinking, “that would be nice,” the next step is engaging your imagination again, but this time it’s about rehearsing the experience of having what you want in your mind’s eye.

Some people call this process “mental rehearsal” or “visualization” or “remembering your future.”

As powerful as picturing something over and over again in your mind is, for some people, trying to visualize yourself in some future situation can be frustrating. You may be thinking, how am I supposed to know how something will feel before I’ve ever experienced it? If that’s the case, I invite you to:

  1. Find pictures and photos and quotes and websites of what you want to create and study those daily.
  2. You can also write down your dreams as a way of bringing them to life.

Another thing you can do is “Act As If.” While I’m not a fan of the advice, “Fake it till you make it” because it just seems so manipulative and inauthentic, Acting As If will help you practice and rehearse your imagined future as a way of preparing yourself for the big day when it does show up in your life!

Actors practice their lines and rehearse their performances before the big show goes live!

And rehearsing isn’t just for actors.

We can apply this principle as we reach for our dreams as well. Think about test driving a car before buying it — you step into the car, sit in the seat, put on your seat belt, adjust your mirrors, turn the key, and you’re off to the races! It’s a great way to see whether or not you like driving this particular car or not.

When you’re able to enter into the environment of who you’d like to become (whether it’s wearing certain clothes, or going to certain places, or going window shopping, or learning something new in school for a future career), it trains your brain to see the new life you want to create as safe and familiar!

Acting As If is a way of experiencing something in real time, in your own body, rather than solely in your head (which is still really powerful), so you can recall the details of how it looked, sounded, smelled, tasted, and felt with your own senses, from your own perspective, later, whenever you want.

Acting As If is another way of saying, “Living into your dream” and it adds fuel to your creations!

So that’s where this Sidney Millionaire Lottery Grand Prize home tour comes in! When I stepped into the home, I felt like I belonged there, like I was getting a preview of my future!

This Sidney home is one of eight grand prize options in the Millionaire Lottery 2018/2019.

The grand prize winner of the Millionaire Lottery doesn’t necessarily have to accept the Sidney home grande prize — they can choose one of seven luxury homes located in:

  1. Tsawwassen,
  2. South Surrey,
  3. White Rock/Sooke (two-condo package),
  4. Downtown Kelowna,
  5. West Kelowna,
  6. Vancouver, or
  7. Sidney.
  8. The winner also has the option of choosing $2.7 million in tax-free cash instead of taking one of the prize homes.

Of all of the stellar choices, the Sidney home is the grand prize I’m going to pick when I win this year’s Millionaire Lottery because I’m planning to turn the property into a wellness retreat centre!

I envision a calming spa, a wellness gift store, guided wellness walks on the beach, hosting over night guests, meeting with my wellness coaching clients, and I can see myself giving self-care workshops in the suite or living room — it’s going to be amazing and I can’t wait for you to visit me there!

That’s my imagined future! What’s yours?

Making Peace with the Fear of Being Judged

by Maria Koropecky, Spiritual Wellness Coach

Many people like to sit on their high horses and look down their noses at everyone else and judge, judge, judge. It’s like a favourite pass-time or maybe even a sport!

man makes judging face.

Judging each other is nothing new. It’s part of our human nature. I think it’s like a survival skill. We need to know who is a friend and who is a foe and even 3-month old babies can read someone’s energy.

Quickly judging someone, rightly or wrongly, tells us if we can like and trust them, if we can feel safe with them, or if they’ll harm us or maybe even kill us. And with that assessment, we slap a big label on them and put them in a shoe box for future reference and treat them accordingly.

Often, the person being judged can suffer some consequences. Ultimately, I think that we fear being judged because it can literally mean a death sentence. Some people believe in a Judgement Day so that can tie into a fear of death. Also, if someone judges you, they can take away your livelihood and freedom.

When I was in high school, I read a book called, The Scarlet Letter by Nathanial Hawthorne — talk about judging! Set in Puritan Massachusetts in the 1640’s, poor Hester Prynne had to walk around with a big red A on her chest after she had an affair with a married man and became pregnant with her daughter, Pearl.

Can you imagine having to sew a red A for adultery on all of your clothes and say, “Hide your husbands everyone, Big A is coming down the street!” Thank goodness we’re not so strict anymore. Still, the judginess continues 400 years later…

As a highly sensitive person myself, I feel like I’ve been judged and criticized harshly all of my life. When I was growing up in the 1970’s, it seemed like the adults in my life (like my grandparents and teachers) only spoke to me when they needed to correct me about something — this time with big red X’s — and those criticisms were never sandwiched between compliments as they might be today.

Consequently, I interpreted their “well-meaning” words as “I’m not enough,” or “I’m not good enough,” or “they don’t like me,” or “there must be something wrong with me.” Not easy beliefs to live with to say the least.

By the way, did you know there’s a word for that?
Atelophobia is about the fear of imperfection and the fear of never being good enough, and by extension, the fear of being judged.

Who knew? Anyway, I also thought, well, “that’s how you treat people,” so I also became very critical of everyone I knew in my life, too. Needless to say, my opinions stated as facts didn’t go over well and I lost a lot of friends over the years. Not so much fun to be around. I’ve since worked on becoming less judgemental and not letting my ego run the show and I feel like I’m making good progress in that area.

But my fear of being judged still comes up every now and then.

In the last few weeks, I’ve been reminded of my beliefs about worthiness again. There’s an acquaintance in my life right now who is criticizing my every move and is bluntly and without care or sensitivity or warmth, pointing out all of my mistakes, making herself right and me wrong. She’s treating me like the adults did in my childhood! If only she could say something nice first, then I’d receive her “suggestions” better. Instead, I become defensive and I end up saying things that come out wrong and we clash and it’s not pleasant.

So I know what it’s like to be judged and criticized and it hurts. It’s hard not to fall into that trap of believing someone else’s opinion of you over your own.

I’m trying to remind myself, “Don’t let someone’s low opinion of you, lower your own opinion of you” and “Your value doesn’t decrease based on someone’s inability to see your worth,” and

“No one can make you feel inferior without your consent,” Eleanor Roosevelt.

I can’t blame this acquaintance for how she’s making me feel. It doesn’t have anything to do with her. She’s just holding up a mirror. It’s all me which means I can change what I do next.

The good news is, the recent events in my life have inspired me to write this blog post and this situation is giving me the opportunity to challenge my outdated beliefs and clear them away once and for all!

Spiritual Ideas to Make Peace with the Fear of Being Judged

  1. Practice Self-Care — If someone is giving you a hard time and is trying to push your buttons, do something nice for yourself (like get a massage or get your haircut or go for a long walk outside) and show yourself you care.
  2. Acceptance — The sooner you accept yourself as you are, accept others as they are, and accept the situation as it is, the sooner you’ll feel better.
  3. Forgiveness — Forgive everyone everything, especially yourself and anyone you feel is judging you. Let go of your past grievances because otherwise they may negatively affect your work (which would in turn create more judgment).
  4. Perfect is Boring — If you think being perfect will keep the judgers at bay, you’re not entirely off the hook. Some people are threatened by perfect people and other people will keep digging till they find some dirt. And striving for perfection is exhausting and if you do happen to be perfect, there’s nothing else left to do or learn anymore — no more room to grow — so what’s the point?
  5. Let Yourself Be Seen Anyway — Some people try to avoid being judged by hiding under the covers and staying home all day because it’s just too risky and dangerous to put themselves out there. But not going out into the world doesn’t work either because it’s a waste of our gifts and we’re here to share and help each other and shine our light.
  6. Lighten Up On Judging Others — Somehow, by not being so judgemental of others, others will not be so judgemental of you. When you find yourself making a mean comment about someone, ask yourself, “What’s that about?” We tend to judge people on what we think is important (like fashion or good driving) and if you catch yourself judging someone and ask yourself about it, you’ll gain some valuable self-awareness in the process.
  7. Relax Your Grip — Part of judging is trying to control other people. Don’t be so rigid about how people should behave or how things should be done. Everybody brings something different to the table and your way is not the only way. Give people a break and let them be who they are.
  8. Send Compassion Instead — The next time you see someone who doesn’t seem to be measuring up to your standards, send them compassion. They’re doing their best.
  9. Remember Your Sense of Humour — So what if you have spinach in between your teeth or if you’ve worn your shirt inside out in public — on the same day! 🙂 Turn your misadventures into funny stories that everyone can relate to and don’t take yourself so seriously.
  10. It’s All Just Feedback — I find if I look at comments as feedback and not criticism, it takes the edge off them. Also, if someone is judging you and telling you something you don’t want to hear, it doesn’t necessarily mean they’re being mean. Next time that happens, remember it’s just feedback. You have the choice to accept their notes or not. But maybe, if you apply their observations to your life, it just might help you up your game and be a better version of yourself.
  11. It’s Not The Truth of Who You Are — Someone’s snap judgement about you is not the Truth (it’s an opinion at best) so don’t consume it like food and put it in your body and carry it around with you and give it meaning, especially if it feels bad.
  12. Labels Are Meaningless — We are not superficial labels of things. We are not our hair colour, we are not the cars we drive, we are not our jobs or our marital status, or the mistakes we make, or our accomplishments. The essence of who we are is so much more than packaging and appearances. We are human beings with tremendous potential!

Here’s a quote from Bob Marley about Perfection in a Relationship:

you're not perfect, he isn't either.

I hope this blog post helps but if you’re still struggling with the fear of being judged and you’re bouncing between perfectionism and avoiding being seen like I have, this is a topic we can work on in our wellness coaching conversations. Please contact me, Maria, if you’d like to talk about your options. I promise I’ll create a safe space for our meeting.

The Secret to Creating a Masterpiece

by Maria Koropecky, Spiritual Wellness Coach

If you’ve lived in a city for any length of time, you’ve probably watched a building go up in a space that was once a parking lot or a vacant lot with tumbleweeds. 🙂

It seems one day it’s the same fenced in property that you’ve walked past a thousand times and then the next day, you notice a big square hole in the ground the size of a city block, and a crane, and people wearing yellow construction hats carrying 2×4’s, and big loud trucks pouring cement.

foundation of new construction.

This goes on for weeks and weeks with no visible progress to write home about, but at the same time, it’s fascinating to watch! I’m sure having a birds’ eye view of an active construction site with silent cameras zooming in on different trades and jobs would make for a great tv show — just like the burning log at Christmas time. I’m serious!

Then all of a sudden, one day, the fence is gone, the crew is gone, and a huge condo and office complex is standing there proudly, and you say, “Where the bleep did that come from?!”

And you also may be thinking, “What does this story have to do with the secret to creating a masterpiece?”

Well, a masterpiece can be anything like a skyscraper, house, painting, sculpture, photograph, novel, poem, song, dance, meal, garden, lecture, business, invention, product, idea, or goal that captures a unique moment in a grande manner. It’s timeless and it’s technically near flawless.

A masterpiece can also be something more ethereal or ineffable like a relationship, or a conversation, or a political movement, or a meaningful life. There’s something breathtaking about its energy.

Would you like to know the secret that leads to creating any of these types of masterpieces? The truth is, they all start with a solid foundation!

Yes, the foundation is the secret!

In a construction site, the foundation sets the tone for the rest of the structure: if the foundation is sound, the whole building will be strong. That’s why they spend such a big chunk of their time, energy, budget, and resources at the foundation stage. That’s why it seems like nothing is happening at the ground level for so many weeks and then the rest of the floors go up in what seems like a matter of days.

Foundations are all about integrity, stability, intention, respect, rules, trust, and vision. If you focus on building a strong foundation first and keep these values in mind as you’re launching your project, you will create a magnum opus!

But if you take short cuts or cheat or skip the foundation all together, you’re building a house of cards on a pile of sand that will topple in a soft breeze. Yikes!

rayner institute logo. When I was in coaching school, we spent many hours talking about the importance of a strong foundation and establishing our foundations. You might say the idea of the foundation was drilled into us! 🙂

We learned that taking the time to build a solid foundation at the beginning of our coaching conversations would lead to amazing transformational and transcendent breakthroughs for our clients — and it’s true!

Once the foundation is established, the rest of the coaching conversation is fluid and easy and even healing! It just goes up and up and up and it feels amazing!

So, if you want to talk to a spiritual wellness coach who takes the time to establish a strong foundation with you by asking thoughtful questions and listening with reverence as you express your deepest thoughts and feelings, and you also aspire to create your own masterpiece, whatever the looks like for you, please contact me, Maria, to talk. I’m looking forward to meeting you!
