Imagining Your Future Is Easier Than You Think!

by Maria Koropecky, Spiritual Wellness Coach

“I am enough of an artist to draw freely upon my imagination. Imagination is more important than knowledge, for knowledge is limited, whereas imagination encircles the world,” ~ Albert Einstein (1929)

Thank you, Albert Einstein for saying, “Imagination is more important the knowledge” because if you can imagine it, it means you’re more than halfway there!

In all of my wellness coaching conversations, I always ask my clients, “What would you like to be, do, have, or give?” or “What would you like to create?” It’s a question that looks to the future (rather than the past) and allows my coaching clients to imagine a future that will light them up.

Answers can be as varied as, “I’d like to write a New York Times bestseller,” or “I want to travel and live in another country for awhile,” or “I’d like to marry the love of my life,” or “I’d like to open a wellness centre,” or “I’d like to live in my oceanfront dream home,” or even, “I’d like to win the lottery!”

We live in a miraculous universe that is filled with infinite possibilities and we can literally create whatever we want in the grand scheme of things! Once we’re able to voice our imagined future in a clear sentence, it means we’ve already tapped into, and have become aware of, the existence of a possibility. Now it’s an option that we can choose, if we want! This is exciting!

I know saying we have access to infinite possibilities at any given moment sounds fishy and far-fetched but it’s true! It all starts with a gift we all have — our imagination!

Imagination is the key to creativity and in order for something to be created, it has to start off as a thought or idea in someone’s imagination first!

With that said, I had a chance to play with this idea a little bit over this past weekend by going on a tour of a million-dollar, ocean view dream home in Sidney by the Sea, BC. Talk about imagination!

Sidney grand prize millionaire lottery home.

This 4,551 sq/ft, oceanfront, west coast contemporary design home with five bedrooms and five bathrooms is located at 1686 Lands End Road in Sidney, BC, just North of Victoria, on the edge of Vancouver Island.

Just imagine yourself sitting outside in your backyard with the love of your life, gazing at the ocean and the starry night sky, contemplating the mysteries of the Universe!

The Sidney Millionaire Lottery Grand Prize Package also includes:

  • over $75,000 in a furniture credit,
  • a 2019 Jaguar F-Type convertible, and
  • $100,000 cash!

The Sidney package is worth over $3 million CAD!

Millionaire Lottery Tickets are on sale now!
2 for $100, 5 for $175, 10 or $250 and 25 for $500.

Now that you’re aware of the Sidney Millionaire Lottery Grand Prize Package and you’re thinking, “that would be nice,” the next step is engaging your imagination again, but this time it’s about rehearsing the experience of having what you want in your mind’s eye.

Some people call this process “mental rehearsal” or “visualization” or “remembering your future.”

As powerful as picturing something over and over again in your mind is, for some people, trying to visualize yourself in some future situation can be frustrating. You may be thinking, how am I supposed to know how something will feel before I’ve ever experienced it? If that’s the case, I invite you to:

  1. Find pictures and photos and quotes and websites of what you want to create and study those daily.
  2. You can also write down your dreams as a way of bringing them to life.
  3. You can also sign up for wellness coaching with me, Maria!

Another thing you can do is “Act As If.” While I’m not a fan of the advice, “Fake it till you make it” because it just seems so manipulative and inauthentic, Acting As If will help you practice and rehearse your imagined future as a way of preparing yourself for the big day when it does show up in your life!

Actors practice their lines and rehearse their performances before the big show goes live!

And rehearsing isn’t just for actors.

We can apply this principle as we reach for our dreams as well. Think about test driving a car before buying it — you step into the car, sit in the seat, put on your seat belt, adjust your mirrors, turn the key, and you’re off to the races! It’s a great way to see whether or not you like driving this particular car or not.

When you’re able to enter into the environment of who you’d like to become (whether it’s wearing certain clothes, or going to certain places, or going window shopping, or learning something new in school for a future career), it trains your brain to see the new life you want to create as safe and familiar!

Acting As If is a way of experiencing something in real time, in your own body, rather than solely in your head (which is still really powerful), so you can recall the details of how it looked, sounded, smelled, tasted, and felt with your own senses, from your own perspective, later, whenever you want.

Acting As If is another way of saying, “Living into your dream” and it adds fuel to your creations!

So that’s where this Sidney Millionaire Lottery Grand Prize home tour comes in! When I stepped into the home, I felt like I belonged there, like I was getting a preview of my future!

Winning the lottery is definitely within the realm of possibilities!

If you want to view the Sidney home for yourself before your buy your tickets, tours will be offered soon, so come for a visit!

Tours and ticket sales starting November 10, 2018
on Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 4pm.

As you can see, imagining your future is easier than you think!

This Sidney home is one of eight grand prize options in the Millionaire Lottery 2018/2019.

The grand prize winner of the Millionaire Lottery doesn’t necessarily have to accept the Sidney home grande prize — they can choose one of seven luxury homes located in:

  1. Tsawwassen,
  2. South Surrey,
  3. White Rock/Sooke (two-condo package),
  4. Downtown Kelowna,
  5. West Kelowna,
  6. Vancouver, or
  7. Sidney.
  8. The winner also has the option of choosing $2.7 million in tax-free cash instead of taking one of the prize homes.

Of all of the stellar choices, the Sidney home is the grand prize I’m going to pick when I win this year’s Millionaire Lottery because I’m planning to turn the property into a wellness retreat centre!

I envision a calming spa, a wellness gift store, guided wellness walks on the beach, hosting over night guests, meeting with my wellness coaching clients, and I can see myself giving self-care workshops in the suite or living room — it’s going to be amazing and I can’t wait for you to visit me there!

That’s my imagined future! What’s yours?

Millionaire Lottery Tickets are on sale now!
2 for $100, 5 for $175, 10 or $250 and 25 for $500.

Making Peace with the Fear of Being Judged

by Maria Koropecky, Spiritual Wellness Coach

Many people like to sit on their high horses and look down their noses at everyone else and judge, judge, judge. It’s like a favourite pass-time or maybe even a sport!

man makes judging face.

Judging each other is nothing new. It’s part of our human nature. I think it’s like a survival skill. We need to know who is a friend and who is a foe and even 3-month old babies can read someone’s energy.

Quickly judging someone, rightly or wrongly, tells us if we can like and trust them, if we can feel safe with them, or if they’ll harm us or maybe even kill us. And with that assessment, we slap a big label on them and put them in a shoe box for future reference and treat them accordingly.

Often, the person being judged can suffer some consequences. Ultimately, I think that we fear being judged because it can literally mean a death sentence. Some people believe in a Judgement Day so that can tie into a fear of death. Also, if someone judges you, they can take away your livelihood and freedom.

When I was in high school, I read a book called, The Scarlet Letter by Nathanial Hawthorne — talk about judging! Set in Puritan Massachusetts in the 1640’s, poor Hester Prynne had to walk around with a big red A on her chest after she had an affair with a married man and became pregnant with her daughter, Pearl.

Can you imagine having to sew a red A for adultery on all of your clothes and say, “Hide your husbands everyone, Big A is coming down the street!” Thank goodness we’re not so strict anymore. Still, the judginess continues 400 years later…

As a highly sensitive person myself, I feel like I’ve been judged and criticized harshly all of my life. When I was growing up in the 1970’s, it seemed like the adults in my life (like my grandparents and teachers) only spoke to me when they needed to correct me about something — this time with big red X’s — and those criticisms were never sandwiched between compliments as they might be today.

Consequently, I interpreted their “well-meaning” words as “I’m not enough,” or “I’m not good enough,” or “they don’t like me,” or “there must be something wrong with me.” Not easy beliefs to live with to say the least.

By the way, did you know there’s a word for that?
Atelophobia is about the fear of imperfection and the fear of never being good enough, and by extension, the fear of being judged.

Who knew? Anyway, I also thought, well, “that’s how you treat people,” so I also became very critical of everyone I knew in my life, too. Needless to say, my opinions stated as facts didn’t go over well and I lost a lot of friends over the years. Not so much fun to be around. I’ve since worked on becoming less judgemental and not letting my ego run the show and I feel like I’m making good progress in that area.

But my fear of being judged still comes up every now and then.

In the last few weeks, I’ve been reminded of my beliefs about worthiness again. There’s an acquaintance in my life right now who is criticizing my every move and is bluntly and without care or sensitivity or warmth, pointing out all of my mistakes, making herself right and me wrong. She’s treating me like the adults did in my childhood! If only she could say something nice first, then I’d receive her “suggestions” better. Instead, I become defensive and I end up saying things that come out wrong and we clash and it’s not pleasant.

So I know what it’s like to be judged and criticized and it hurts. It’s hard not to fall into that trap of believing someone else’s opinion of you over your own.

I’m trying to remind myself, “Don’t let someone’s low opinion of you, lower your own opinion of you” and “Your value doesn’t decrease based on someone’s inability to see your worth,” and

“No one can make you feel inferior without your consent,” Eleanor Roosevelt.

I can’t blame this acquaintance for how she’s making me feel. It doesn’t have anything to do with her. She’s just holding up a mirror. It’s all me which means I can change what I do next.

The good news is, the recent events in my life have inspired me to write this blog post and this situation is giving me the opportunity to challenge my outdated beliefs and clear them away once and for all!

Spiritual Ideas to Make Peace with the Fear of Being Judged

  1. Practice Self-Care — If someone is giving you a hard time and is trying to push your buttons, do something nice for yourself (like get a massage or get your haircut or go for a long walk outside) and show yourself you care.
  2. Acceptance — The sooner you accept yourself as you are, accept others as they are, and accept the situation as it is, the sooner you’ll feel better.
  3. Forgiveness — Forgive everyone everything, especially yourself and anyone you feel is judging you. Let go of your past grievances because otherwise they may negatively affect your work (which would in turn create more judgment).
  4. Perfect is Boring — If you think being perfect will keep the judgers at bay, you’re not entirely off the hook. Some people are threatened by perfect people and other people will keep digging till they find some dirt. And striving for perfection is exhausting and if you do happen to be perfect, there’s nothing else left to do or learn anymore — no more room to grow — so what’s the point?
  5. Let Yourself Be Seen Anyway — Some people try to avoid being judged by hiding under the covers and staying home all day because it’s just too risky and dangerous to put themselves out there. But not going out into the world doesn’t work either because it’s a waste of our gifts and we’re here to share and help each other and shine our light.
  6. Lighten Up On Judging Others — Somehow, by not being so judgemental of others, others will not be so judgemental of you. When you find yourself making a mean comment about someone, ask yourself, “What’s that about?” We tend to judge people on what we think is important (like fashion or good driving) and if you catch yourself judging someone and ask yourself about it, you’ll gain some valuable self-awareness in the process.
  7. Relax Your Grip — Part of judging is trying to control other people. Don’t be so rigid about how people should behave or how things should be done. Everybody brings something different to the table and your way is not the only way. Give people a break and let them be who they are.
  8. Send Compassion Instead — The next time you see someone who doesn’t seem to be measuring up to your standards, send them compassion. They’re doing their best.
  9. Remember Your Sense of Humour — So what if you have spinach in between your teeth or if you’ve worn your shirt inside out in public — on the same day! 🙂 Turn your misadventures into funny stories that everyone can relate to and don’t take yourself so seriously.
  10. It’s All Just Feedback — I find if I look at comments as feedback and not criticism, it takes the edge off them. Also, if someone is judging you and telling you something you don’t want to hear, it doesn’t necessarily mean they’re being mean. Next time that happens, remember it’s just feedback. You have the choice to accept their notes or not. But maybe, if you apply their observations to your life, it just might help you up your game and be a better version of yourself.
  11. It’s Not The Truth of Who You Are — Someone’s snap judgement about you is not the Truth (it’s an opinion at best) so don’t consume it like food and put it in your body and carry it around with you and give it meaning, especially if it feels bad.
  12. Labels Are Meaningless — We are not superficial labels of things. We are not our hair colour, we are not the cars we drive, we are not our jobs or our marital status, or the mistakes we make, or our accomplishments. The essence of who we are is so much more than packaging and appearances. We are human beings with tremendous potential!

Here’s a quote from Bob Marley about Perfection in a Relationship:

you're not perfect, he isn't either.

I hope this blog post helps but if you’re still struggling with the fear of being judged and you’re bouncing between perfectionism and avoiding being seen like I have, this is a topic we can work on in our wellness coaching conversations. Please contact me, Maria, if you’d like to talk about your options. I promise I’ll create a safe space for our meeting.

The Secret to Creating a Masterpiece

by Maria Koropecky, Spiritual Wellness Coach

If you’ve lived in a city for any length of time, you’ve probably watched a building go up in a space that was once a parking lot or a vacant lot with tumbleweeds. 🙂

It seems one day it’s the same fenced in property that you’ve walked past a thousand times and then the next day, you notice a big square hole in the ground the size of a city block, and a crane, and people wearing yellow construction hats carrying 2×4’s, and big loud trucks pouring cement.

foundation of new construction.

This goes on for weeks and weeks with no visible progress to write home about, but at the same time, it’s fascinating to watch! I’m sure having a birds’ eye view of an active construction site with silent cameras zooming in on different trades and jobs would make for a great tv show — just like the burning log at Christmas time. I’m serious!

Then all of a sudden, one day, the fence is gone, the crew is gone, and a huge condo and office complex is standing there proudly, and you say, “Where the bleep did that come from?!”

Capital Park.
Leeds Certified, Capital Park, Victoria, BC. 2018

And you also may be thinking, “What does this story have to do with the secret to creating a masterpiece?”

Well, a masterpiece can be anything like a skyscraper, house, painting, sculpture, photograph, novel, poem, song, dance, meal, garden, lecture, business, invention, product, idea, or goal that captures a unique moment in a grande manner. It’s timeless and it’s technically near flawless.

A masterpiece can also be something more ethereal or ineffable like a relationship, or a conversation, or a political movement, or a meaningful life. There’s something breathtaking about its energy.

Would you like to know the secret that leads to creating any of these types of masterpieces? The truth is, they all start with a solid foundation!

Yes, the foundation is the secret!

In a construction site, the foundation sets the tone for the rest of the structure: if the foundation is sound, the whole building will be strong. That’s why they spend such a big chunk of their time, energy, budget, and resources at the foundation stage. That’s why it seems like nothing is happening at the ground level for so many weeks and then the rest of the floors go up in what seems like a matter of days.

Foundations are all about integrity, stability, intention, respect, rules, trust, and vision. If you focus on building a strong foundation first and keep these values in mind as you’re launching your project, you will create a magnum opus!

But if you take short cuts or cheat or skip the foundation all together, you’re building a house of cards on a pile of sand that will topple in a soft breeze. Yikes!

rayner institute logo. When I was in coaching school, we spent many hours talking about the importance of a strong foundation and establishing our foundations. You might say the idea of the foundation was drilled into us! 🙂

We learned that taking the time to build a solid foundation at the beginning of our coaching conversations would lead to amazing transformational and transcendent breakthroughs for our clients — and it’s true!

Once the foundation is established, the rest of the coaching conversation is fluid and easy and even healing! It just goes up and up and up and it feels amazing!

So, if you want to talk to a spiritual wellness coach who takes the time to establish a strong foundation with you by asking thoughtful questions and listening with reverence as you express your deepest thoughts and feelings, and you also aspire to create your own masterpiece, whatever the looks like for you, please contact me, Maria, to talk. I’m looking forward to meeting you!

Gratitude is the Secret Sauce of Life!

by Maria Koropecky, Spiritual Wellness Coach

I’m going to start off by saying Thank You and Happy Thanksgiving!

I hope you’re enjoying this time with your family and friends and you’re tasting all of your favourite treats like turkey and mashed potatoes and gravy and pumpkin pie and all of the fixins’ that come with this special holiday.

I’m sharing this day with family-friends and I’m counting my blessings. I have so much to be grateful for in my life! It’s always nice when people invite me over and serve delicious food made with love.

Two men are shaking hands in front of a photocopier to say thank you.

Most of us (especially polite Canadians! 🙂 ) are taught to say “thank you” after we receive something and that’s great. It’s an acknowledgement of an energy exchange.

Usually, the order is:

  1. Someone gives something to you or does something nice for you; and
  2. You receive it; and
  3. You say, “Thanks!”

But today I want to turn that order on it’s head and suggest saying “thank you” first!

Whaaattt???

When we say thank you and are grateful for what we have, it means our needs are being met and therefore, there’s no need to fill anymore. Everything is taken care of and it’s a wonderful position to be in.

Sometimes, though, the things we most need and want seem to be missing. So, the question is: How do we create what we want to have and bring the good things in?

The answer is gratitude! Gratitude is the secret sauce when it comes to having what we want in life!

I’ve been studying the work of Dr. Joe Dispenza and he says, “Gratitude is the ultimate state of receivorship.”

The idea is, be grateful first, as if you already have what you’re asking for, and then you’ll receive it.

I know at first glance that what I’m talking about seems to put the cart in front of the horse and it may even sound like a downright lie. But I promise, once you get the balance right, it’s quite elegant!

Gratitude Spectrum

There’s a sweet spot on the gratitude spectrum that will make asking for what you want and receiving all kinds of gifts and blessings way easier.

On the one end of the spectrum, when you’re asking someone for something (like your parents, spouse, boss, or the Universe) you may be crossing your fingers and hoping and praying and saying, “please, please, please!”

Unfortunately, pleading is not a sustainable or optimal method of manifestation. Sure it works sometimes because people may feel sorry for you, but pulling at people’s strings comes across as really desperate and needy and weak and will more than likely turn people off. It’s also quite manipulative.

As Dr. Joe said in one of his interviews, “hope is a beggar.”

And then on the other end of the spectrum, declaring what you want in no uncertain terms is also a misguided approach. It’s a “Give this to me or else!” expectation. It brings to mind robbing someone at gunpoint and making a demand and scaring the daylights out of people in the process.

Using force comes from a place of fear and hostility and never ends well. And ultimately, being overly demanding never includes gratitude.

Gratitude is the sweet spot

As it turns out, gratitude is the sweet spot between begging and demanding! Gratitude is the secret sauce when it comes to allowing and receiving the good things in life!

Do you know why? Because gratitude is a giving energy! It’s generous and it creates a space for things to happen.

Gratitude is giving thanks that we already have what we’re asking for. Gratitude is coming from a place of faith and trust that what we want and need are already in our magnetic field and are on their way to us and it’s just a matter of time before they show up in physical form.

I know that when I finally receive something I’ve needed, I feel a sense of relief on top of the gratitude. When I feel relief and gratitude, I can relax and know that things are going to work out and I’m OK. Isn’t that way better than worrying and doubting and feeling fear?

Try this next time:

  1. Say thank you and be grateful for what you want to have, do, be, or give;
  2. In your imagination, see yourself having what you want and feel what it would be like to have what you want; and
  3. Receive and have and enjoy what you want!

So the next time you’d like to create something in your life, say over and over again, “I’m so happy and grateful and relieved now that I have….” (especially before you start seeing any evidence that what you’re doing is working) and really feel deep in your heart what it would be like to have what it is you’re asking for and really honestly, sincerely, and authentically, feel grateful in the present moment for everyone and everything that you can think of, including what you want to create.

It’s an amazing feeling!

As you can see, there’s no need to beg, borrow, or steal in our abundant Universe. There’s more than enough for everybody and it all starts with gratitude!

Thank you!

Sobriety and Spiritual Awakening

by Maria Koropecky, Spiritual Wellness Coach

Many people don’t know this about me because I don’t talk about it much, but on August 28, 2018, I celebrated my “Soberthday,” my 2-year anniversary of being sober. Yay!

We all have our reasons to start living sober. It’s a scary proposition to change a habit because habits can be stronger than steel.

For me, it was about my health. I read somewhere that “wine is not a health food” and somehow that was enough to get me thinking. I told myself that at my age, as I’m heading into peri-menopause, I might make things easier for myself if I didn’t complicate my hormonal mix with alcohol.

That was probably a wise decision on my part, but I’ve also learned that there’s way more to living sober than I initially thought. Sober living is also a spiritual quest.

I used to love drinking wine. That was my go-to beverage. There was something about crisp white wines on sunny days and warming red wines on rainy days that kept me going year round.

I liked the romance of drinking wine and the socializing and the dinner parties. I liked the deep conversations that came after a few glasses of “truth serum.” I liked turning off the worrying and the anxiety for a few hours.

But I didn’t like the hangovers and the headaches and the mood swings and the foggy brain and feeling tired all of the time. I didn’t like not being able to drive my car home after a night out or carrying extra body weight or saying mean things to people.

And drinking’s expensive! I shutter to think about all of the money I spent on bottles and bottles over years and years, and on top of that, all of the time I had wasted sitting around and drinking and then recovering the next day.

I’m glad those days are behind me.

keep climbing your mountain anyway.

That’s not to say that suddenly my life became a breeze once I gave up the hooch. Not at all. In a sense, my life actually became harder.

These last few years have been difficult — not because of feeling deprived though — not drinking is relatively easy for me — I haven’t really had any wine cravings to speak of.

And I’ve had my share of opportunities to drink in the last two years. I’ve been to weddings and funerals and even on my worst days…

  • like when a celebrity cancelled a massage appointment within 2 minutes of me starting the session,
  • having my heart broken,
  • my cat dying,
  • loneliness,
  • financial stress,
  • not getting hired after job interviews,
  • more rejection,
  • more disappointments,
  • betrayals from so-called friends,
  • bad weather,
  • all of the recent, crazy world events, etc., etc., etc.,

I didn’t really have to fight the urge to pour myself a glass of wine to help numb the pain or to cope. Somehow it didn’t occur to me to drown my sorrows with wine anymore.

My life has gotten harder because I am now on a spiritual path that is requiring more from me. My new choices are bringing all of the things that I had been covering up and avoiding to the surface of my life and now I have to face them head on so I can finally let them go.

I think the Serenity Prayer, as recited in Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, eloquently touches on the relationship between spiritual truths and sobriety and that’s why it’s so enduring and powerful:

Serenity Prayer
Reinhold Niebuhr (1892-1971)

God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.

Living one day at a time;
enjoying one moment at a time;
accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;
taking, as He did, this sinful world
as it is, not as I would have it;
trusting that He will make all things right
if I surrender to His Will;
that I may be reasonably happy in this life
and supremely happy with Him
forever in the next.
Amen.

The Serenity Prayer acknowledges the spiritual truths of acceptance, courage, wisdom, being present, trust, and surrendering to a higher power, and these, among others, are the principles that I am learning to embrace in this new, healthier chapter of my life.

A spiritual life is not necessarily easy (though it can be). Unfortunately, most people, including me, have to struggle through suffering for awhile before we can enjoy our blessings.

The beauty is, there’s a wonderful life waiting for us on the other side of the obstacle course. We just have to keep going.

“You let time pass. That’s the cure. You survive the days. You float like a rabid ghost through the weeks. You cry and wallow and lament and scratch your way back up through the months. And then one day you find yourself alone on a bench in the sun and you close your eyes and lean your head back and you realize you’re okay.”
~ Cheryl Strayed, Brave Enough

If you’ve tried to make healthier choices for yourself, like living sober, but are struggling and suffering on your journey, and aren’t sitting on that “bench in the sun” yet and think it would be easier to give up and go back to your old ways, take a breath and keep climbing your mountain anyway.

“Hold on for one more day,” as the Wilson-Phillips song goes.

Ironically, suffering is life’s way of giving you an opportunity to break the chains from your past so you can move forward. Don’t suffer just to suffer. We are not meant to suffer in this life.

But if you are going to suffer, don’t let it go to waste. Use the suffering to propel you into a better, kinder, more compassionate version of yourself. Let the suffering and the sobriety be part of your spiritual awakening.

How I Found Out About the Rayner Institute

Editor’s Note: I originally published this article on my Homespunspa blog back on September 19, 2015. You may still see the expired link when you do a search. I’ve decided to re-post the article here on this coaching blog because it fits better on this website.

Over the past few years, many people, who have been looking for a coaching school, have reached out to me because of this blog post and I think that’s great.

If you’re trying to decide which coaching school to sign up with and you’d like to talk to me as well and ask me any questions about the Rayner Institute as a coaching school, please contact me, Maria, by email, anytime.

How I Found Out About the Rayner Institute

by Maria Koropecky, Wellness Coach

Secretly, I’ve wanted to be a life coach for at least a decade but it didn’t seem like it was possible for me. I would not have known where to go to get coaching training even if I had given the thought any serious consideration.

I hired a business coach back in 2005 and I loved our conversations about the spiritual laws of the universe but this particular coach made things more about her than they were about me (as the client) and after a few months, she pushed me away and that was that. We’ve not spoken since and that experience left a bad taste in my mouth about coaches in general.

I’m glad I didn’t give up on coaching forever because of one bad apple. Much has changed in the coaching profession in the past few years and life coaches are being recognized for doing some wonderful work for the people of this planet.

I wish I had had the sense to become a coach sooner but the timing wasn’t right for me. I still had a lot of living to do first before I could embark on this career. Like for example, I had to go to esthetics school in 2010 so I could awaken my healing and nurturing side and learn how to work with people hands on.

Had I just jumped ahead and gone to coaching school at that time instead, (which would have worked for other people), I personally would have been missing some key ingredients for my recipe and my coaching practice would not have flourished. I also would not have opened my mobile spa, which, as you’ll see, is integral to this story.

Anyway, fast forward to the summer of 2014. It was a challenging summer for me personally. My finances were not in good shape and on top of that, my Uncle, who was also my Godfather, died and then my friend from high school had committed suicide. In the bigger picture, you may also recall that in August of that year, Robin Williams committed suicide and Joan Rivers died as well. The world had taken on a serious tone.

Meanwhile, I got a call from a woman who was looking to hire someone to give her 90-year-old mother a manicure. So, I went to the seniors’ care home, just going about my business, and that was the day I met June, her daughter, Carol, and Carol’s husband, Peter. I had no idea how pivotal that day would be for me.

The manicure appointment went well enough that they called me again for another appointment and I started visiting June every five weeks or so. Often, Carol was present also.

In November, Carol mentioned something to her mother about going away for a week to upgrade her coaching training and my ear’s perked up.

Rayner Institute logo.“Did you say coaching???”

As it turned out, Carol is a coach and a facilitator at the Rayner Institute and she said there was a course starting in February, if I was interested. So I took her card and thought about it long and hard.

Eventually, in April of 2015, I took the plunge and enrolled in the Self-Actualized Coaching and Mentoring Program at the Rayner Institute and I have since passed my exams and graduated.

Currently, I’m going through the program again but this time as a Ride-Along where I get to hold a healing space for the new students and support them on their journey as they enter the coaching profession and become certified coaches themselves.

And last night during class, I had my own personal insight that made a big difference in how I see my life. Mark Rayner, the founder of the Rayner Institute, was coaching Carol to show the students the beauty of a transformational and transcendent coaching conversation.

(Normally, I wouldn’t share what goes on in a confidential coaching class but I will have asked for permission from Carol and Mark before publishing this post).

Carol spoke about her mother. She wanted to enjoy the time she spends with her even if it’s just flipping through a catalogue together. She said that 18 months ago, her mother became very ill and she was in hospital in Calgary for a month, and they didn’t give her much time to live. Somehow during that difficult time, they sold her mother’s house and moved her to Victoria.

As I listened to Carol describe the process of moving her mother to the Island where she would be closer to the whole family including her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, I marvelled at how those events and decisions also affected me, someone they didn’t even know existed yet. It struck me that an act as personal as caring for an elderly parent could also have so much influence over other people’s lives, known and unknown, as well.

To me, if June hadn’t moved to Victoria and if Carol hadn’t gone looking for a manicurist for her mother and if Carol hadn’t mentioned coaching, then I would not have found the Rayner Institute and I would have probably postponed my dream of becoming a life coach indefinitely.

Suddenly, the timing was right. A lot of things had to happen behind the scenes in order for me to get to this place in my life and my point is, you can’t write this stuff, you can’t script it, and you can’t force it. You just have to follow your heart wherever it wants to go.

Also, and this was my insight last night,

you have no idea whose lives you touch even if you never, ever meet them directly.

That’s the beauty of coaching. You get to touch the lives of people and help them get to where they want to go just by being you and doing what you do. And in turn, the people who are getting coached are also spreading love and kindness and healing energy to the people in their lives and day by day, the world becomes a better place for all of us.

I’m truly grateful for June and Carol for leading me here and for my extraordinary coaching training at the Rayner Institute and now I can pay it forward as a coach to my friends and clients.

How does that sound?

In my experience, practicing self-care on a daily basis is super important! But how do you choose which self-care activity is best for you to do at this moment?

In “How to Practice Colourful Self-Care” I talk about a colourful system that will help you get started!

You’ll get ideas for each of the different areas of self-care including:

Don’t Lose Your Heart!

by Maria Koropecky, Wellness Coach & Spiritual Teacher

On February 13th, I had the joy of attending “The Power of Your Words” presented by Caroline Myss at the University of Victoria.

When I woke up that morning, I had no idea I was going to be at UVic by the end of the day. It was a completely unexpected and welcomed surprise. To me, it was a little miracle how everything came together and interestingly enough, Caroline lightly touched on that idea in her talk.

In essence, she said each day is a new day, a new start, a blank slate, and we get to choose our reality, and what we experience, and it starts with the words we use. We have no idea what the day will bring so why not nudge it in a good direction with our words.

I love that Caroline Myss said, “Words are our Magic Carpet!” I must be choosing some pretty good words these days!

I’m grateful to my best client and friend Linda for gifting me the ticket!

It was a big deal for me to go and I actually wore a dress, heels, and make-up to the event. I also decided to wear my rose quartz heart Christmas tree ornament necklace and rose quartz bracelet because it was the day before Valentine’s Day. More on that later…

Rose Quartz & Rainbows.
“Don’t Lose Your Heart!”

Seeing Caroline Myss in person (from the balcony) was significant for me. Her book, Sacred Contracts, which I read around 2002-2004, explained so much to me spiritually and I even made my own set of Archetype cards from her list.

But more than that, I feel like I’ve been on a deep and profound spiritual journey of awakening and for the last year or so, it has been intense. Lots of crying, lots of letting go, lots of shedding my old ways. To help me through this process, I’ve been studying the work of Eckhart Tolle.

I’ve been searching for answers to the big questions of life and it’s been very emotional and some people told me that I was depressed and that I needed to talk to a therapist. Caroline Myss explained that people often confuse depression with spiritual crisis but we don’t have the language to express and articulate what’s going on with us, so the depression gets the attention, but not the spirit or soul. Both depression and spiritual crisis can show up similarly, but if you sense you need to find the meaning and purpose to your life, then that’s a clue that you might be having a spiritual crisis this time.

I thought, yes, that’s what I’ve been going through this past year: a spiritual crisis.

That’s good news!

Here’s my opportunity to push through into a whole new dimension of living life and I’m really excited about this breakthrough!

Instead of letting this spiritual heartbreak be my excuse to keep me unconscious, I’m going to use it to help me awaken into consciousness.

That’s the message that I keep hearing from spiritual teachers. Eckhart Tolle says the most important thing we can do for humanity is to be conscious and present.

And Caroline Myss explained that back in the 1960’s, with the introduction of nuclear weapons that can potentially destroy us, “we unleashed a darkness into the world.” However, around the same time, the world religions were also stepping up their presence. The East and the West were talking to each other and big changes were taking place. There was a counter force to the darkness that was also emerging. It’s like two sides of the same coin, one balances the other. In the midst of this darkness, there is also light.

At this point of the talk, this is where Caroline Myss really lit up! I don’t know if it was the stage lighting or something else, but I saw violet light surrounding her. It was like a purple, misty shadow trailing behind her movements. Violet is the most spiritual colour. It’s associated with the Crown chakra, our connection to the Divine, so I knew she was speaking Spiritual Truth.

That’s what we’re called to do. As generations living in a dark, nuclear age, we’re called to be the light!

This reminds me of Bruce Cockburn’s song, “Lovers in a Dangerous Time,” where he says, “You’ve got to kick at the darkness till it bleeds daylight.” We are lovers in a dangerous time — lovers in the sense of bigger picture lovers of humanity, not necessarily romantic couples, as I once thought.

But how do you fight the good fight and shine your light when you’re living in fear and pain?

Caroline says there’s no archetype for people who have been wounded but have somehow moved forward, yet still have remained vulnerable. It’s an interesting mix — wounded, vulnerable, and strong. We’ve all been wounded one way or another, on a personal level and on a global level, and we’re really good at re-telling our victim stories over and over again.

But we can’t wallow in the victim role anymore!

Caroline said “Coddling doesn’t serve anybody.” We’re past the point of coddling each other through the pain. I’ve decided I’m not going to entertain those victim stories, either from myself, or my coaching clients, or my friends, anymore.

The better question is, “what strength is emerging” or “what is the gift?” It’s not about the adversity, or our history, it’s about how we respond from here that counts.

And this is what I got from Caroline’s talk: It’s time to retire those victim stories and poor word choices and step up in this critical time in history. Crazy world leaders, missile warnings, and natural disasters are the wake up calls!

It’s time we take our head out of the sand, or put down those distracting devices, or resist those numbing addictions, and instead, be present!

If you feel like you’ve been going through a spiritual crises, as I have, and you’ve been called to shine your light in this world and do something really amazing, then do it! The only one who is stopping you is you. You are in charge of your reality and it’s up to you! The words you say to yourself and out loud will create your path. Choose them thoughtfully!

And that’s exactly what I’m doing starting today. Hearing Caroline Myss speak affirmed in my heart that I’d like to join her and Eckhart Tolle and many others and be a spiritual teacher as well. I’m open to working with a mentor, if you know anybody!

And I’d like to put forth a new archetype, that I like to call Green Leaders, that represents people who have been through the trenches but have also emerged as conscious and awakened leaders with heart. Just because you’ve been through it, doesn’t give you the excuse to be miserable, and mean, or to fall back into unconsciousness. Let the adversity be your doorway to enlightenment.

Let’s define the Green Leader archetype together so we can enjoy Mother Earth for many, many thousands more generations to come! What do you think, Caroline Myss?

The title of this post is, “Don’t lose your heart.” That’s my message for today. Although things may seem bleak, remember, we’re still in the game. Don’t lose faith. Prayers are always heard and answered and miracles happen every day. Caroline finished her talk by praying, “May God hover over us.”

As I was leaving the auditorium, I grazed over something with my shoe. I looked behind me and it was my pink quartz heart necklace on the floor. I quickly retrieved it and as I was picking it up, a woman who saw me said, “Don’t lose your heart!” and she was stunned a little by what she said, so she said it again, “Don’t lose your heart!” and I said, “Noooooo!”

Talk about the “power of words!”

I believe this anonymous woman was speaking on behalf of the Universe in that moment. “Don’t lose your heart, Green Leaders!”

Thank you anonymous woman in the auditorium, and thank you Linda for the ticket, and thank you Caroline Myss for coming to Victoria! Come back anytime!
