10 Benefits of Self-Care

by Maria Koropecky, Ammolite Wellness Coach

I have recently walked my own life-changing Camino in Spain and I firmly believe I could not have gone on my adventure and climbed those mountains without practicing self-care first.

I’m a new woman!

Maria Koropecky Ammolite Wellness Coach.

In the months preceding my big trip, I made self-care my priority.

  1. I practiced my easy version of Intermittent Fasting and managed to release over 11 kilos (25 pounds)
  2. I built up my physical strength by working out and going on long wellness walks in my neighbourhood
  3. I also looked under the hood and re-calibrated my mindset. I started telling myself a new, more empowering story and my life changed exponentially, for the better!

Now, I continue to practice self-care in one shape or other every day and it’s part of my lifestyle.

Self-Care Works!

Self-care is any activity – like applying cream on your hands, or writing in a journal, or admiring a flower – that we do deliberately – in order to take care of our mental, emotional, spiritual and physical health.

Just to be clear, self-care is NOT being:

• lazy
• egotistical
• selfish
• self-centered
• narcissistic
• and it’s not another chore for you to get through!

(Not) All about me.
Self-Care is NOT being lazy, egotistical, selfish or narcissistic.

The benefits of self-care are far reaching!

10 Benefits of Self-Care

1. Peace of Mind

Self-care is about giving yourself attention, kindness and nourishment so you can be at peace with yourself and be present for your loved ones.

2. Compassion

Self-care starts from within and practicing self-care allows you to give yourself compassion and love – love that doesn’t depend on something or someone outside of you.

3. Healing

Self-care is a self-generating fountain and the beauty is, you are being both the giver and the receiver of loving kindness at the same time! You are both the healer and the healed!

4. Higher Self-Worth

Self-care is giving yourself the message that you are loveable, and you are worthy, and you matter, and you are safe, and you are enough – because that is the Truth!

5. Increased Longetivity & Quality of Life

One of my favourite clients, Myrtle, turned 102 in 2019! Myrtle is an inspiration to everyone she meets and if I ever reach my 100’s, I hope my quality of life is like hers and I hope yours is too. On-going self-care can really make a huge difference in the long run.

Happy New Year!

6. Friendlier Neighbours

Another bonus from self-care is when people see you taking care of yourself and treating yourself with kindness, they will treat you well also. If you carry yourself in a healthy way and believe you are worth it, others will mirror your positivity back to you and will be more friendly towards you.

7. Leadership

Also, when people start noticing your progress, they may even start to model your example (people like your kids, friends and co-workers) which will improve their health and relationships, and then the idea of self-care will ripple throughout the world, making the world a better place for us all.

8. Fun

Self-care is also fun! Can you picture yourself blending essential oils, or taking photos of flowers, or riding your bike like you did when you were a kid?

9. Freedom

Being healthy in body, mind and spirit gives you freedom to explore your world in whatever way you want. Self-care helps you let go of the shackles that have been weighing you down and allows you to travel light.

10. Giving from your Abundance

Ultimately, self-care is a way to fill up your own well and keep it replenished, so you can give to others from the overflow and from your abundance! That means, no more scraping from the bottom of the barrel!

Who is into giving from your abundance?

This is just the tip of the iceberg of what is available to you once you start practicing self-care!

My Day of Wellness in Kananaskis

By Maria Koropecky, Ammolite Wellness Coach

My life has been a whirlwind of activity for the past couple of months!

First, I travelled to Spain and walked my Camino in September. It was an amazing, life-changing experience and I’m so grateful I had the freedom to take the time in my life to do it.

I’m currently writing a novel about my Camino so stay tuned for updates!

Upon my return to Victoria, BC, I quickly packed up all of my worldly possessions into my car and drove across the Rocky Mountains to move to Calgary, Alberta in October!

BC Mountains behind me. Photo by Maria Koropecky Ammolite Wellness Coach.
BC Mountains behind me! Photo by Maria Koropecky Ammolite Wellness Coach.

The very next day after landing in my new home in Calgary, I got back into my car and made the short trip West to Kananaskis, AB for a Day of Wellness with Evolve Retreat Co!

I’m so glad I made the effort to brave the Rockies in October and come all this way to attend this wellness event! I really needed to practice some well-deserved self-care!

Kananaskis, Alberta is the perfect setting for a wellness retreat!

Tucked within the clear-cut Rocky Mountains, the Village of Kananaskis is a splendid gem! Perhaps you might have heard about Kananaskis during the 1988 Calgary Olympic Games.

My Day of Wellness took place at Crosswaters Resort, which features newly- renovated guest suites, four restaurants, conference facilities, a wellness spa, and access to amazing hiking trails with spectacular views!

I got my fill of mountain fresh air!

When I first arrived at 10:15am, I was warmly welcomed by the Evolve Retreat Co. team, especially the Retreat Coordinator, Tina Green.

We started the jam-packed day with a meditation with Yoga & Mindset Coach, Marin McCue. She invited us to tune into a word or intention to keep in mind during the rest of the Day of Wellness and my word was “freedom.”

From there, we were asked to choose one to three cards that were arranged on the floor that best described our experience in that moment.

I stepped out into the hallway where the cards were and I immediately had the sense to turn to my left. Right away I saw a card that spoke to me. I picked it up and didn’t need to look at the rest!

Zipper card.
“Walking into an unknown future is like walking into an ever-opening zipper!”
~ Maria Koropecky, Ammolite Wellness Coach

I chose this abstract card because two mornings earlier, my last night in Victoria, right before my solo Rocky Mountain road trip, I was thinking that walking into an unknown future is like walking into an ever-opening zipper!

I was reminding myself that I just needed to trust that with every step forward, the path would unfold naturally. It’s a wonderful space to be in!

From that insightful activity, we headed to the tennis courts where we had an exhilarating workout with celebrity fitness trainer, Tommy Europe, and I felt so blessed to be there!

There’s nothing like running around outside and getting your heart-rate up in the company of a bunch of friendly, smiling people, surrounded by green pine trees, grey chiselled mountains, and endless blue skies!

That’s the picture of wellness for me!

We had a lovely lunch at Forte Restaurant and then we went on a nature hike where I tasted Juniper Berries. Yes, they taste like Gin!

We were able to connect to the Earth while sitting on a cool, green, grassy slope while listening to the wind and the birds and a beautiful, guided meditation, lead by Yoga & Adventure Guide, Kristen Stuart.

Nature Hike near Crosswaters Resort.
Can you see the shape of the blue cat in the sky?
Photo by Maria Koropecky, Ammolite Wellness Coach

To me, I felt the outstretched valley and the surrounding mountains, like arms wide open, were saying, “Welcome!” I know I have come a long way and although there may be another mountain to climb ahead of me, now it’s time to rest in the valley of receiving and enjoy the fruits of prosperity that I’ve been working so hard for.

And the blue cat shape in the sky is a nice touch, if I do say so myself.

Later, our group returned to the conference room where we joined the
5-day retreat group and learned about Nutrition with Registered Dietician, Melissa Goldsmith.

Her presentation, which included tasty smoothies and freshly-made Evolve Energy Bites, was followed by an eye-opening workshop on sleep with Medical Director, Ingemaud Gerber.

And then, with mellow, sweet sounding, live, cello music performed by Erin Beach playing in the background, we rested on our yoga mats and retreated inward to activate our Solar Plexus and Heart Chakras in a Yoga Nidra experience lead by Yoga & Adventure Guide, Sarah Harvie.

Very deep and relaxing!

And as night fell upon the mountains, once again it was time to eat, so we headed to the Cedar Room and enjoyed great conversations and a delicious and nutritious meal prepared by Crosswaters Resort chefs.

All in all, I had a beautiful and inspiring Day of Wellness in Kananaskis and I highly recommend Crosswaters Resort and Evolve Retreat Co!

And now that I’m back in my new home in Calgary, I’m ready to walk into my future with arms wide open!

My Mystical Moment

by Maria Koropecky, Ammolite Wellness Coach

“Into the Mystic” by Van Morrison is one of my favourite songs and I feel like I “sailed into the mystic” myself this past weekend.

The strangest thing happened to me after I posted my blog, “Coaching is a Creating Conversation.”

In the post I shared a video clip from the movie, “Elizabeth the Golden Age: The New World,” where Sir Walter Raleigh describes the New World to Queen Elizabeth I.

To me, Mr. Raleigh really captures the essence of coaching. It’s a creative process that starts as a smudge on the horizon of your imagination and then somehow grows into something you can actually walk into in real life.

Anyway, for my blog post, I chose to include a photo I took a couple of years ago from Island View Beach near Victoria, BC. It was the closest thing I had to seeing land from the sea as in Mr. Raleigh’s story.

Sandy cliffs off in the distance. Photo by Maria Koropecky

I like the photo because there’s symmetry with the birds, and off in the distance, across the water, you can also see some sandy cliffs on an island.

In my own head, I’ve always called those sandy cliffs, “The Cliffs of Dover” because I didn’t know their real name.

Two days after I posted my blog, I got a completely unrelated text from my sister-in-law asking if I’d like to come and visit the mainland for her brother’s 50th birthday party. She also said for me to bring my passport.

“Why would I need to bring my passport?” I asked.

“Because we’re going to Point Roberts first and that’s in the States.”

“Oh. Good to know.”

I figured this would be a good opportunity for me to do a dry run travelling with my new backpack and my passport, 10 days before I set off to walk the Camino in Spain, so I said “Sure, I’d like to come.”

So, on Saturday, my brother and his family picked me up from the ferries and we headed to the U.S. to visit his friends from architecture school who had just bought a house in Point Roberts.

Until then, I had never even heard of Point Robert before even though it’s just a hop, skip, and a jump from Vancouver Island.

After we crossed the border, it was like we had stepped into a mythical forest – everything was so green and lush!

We arrived in the middle of the afternoon. My brother’s friends offered to take us on a short hike from their home to the beach and we all enthusiastically took them up on their invitation.

And that’s when I saw the “Cliffs of Dover” up close!

Sandy cliffs in Point Roberts, Washington

I had actually walked into my own photo that I was looking at a few days before!

Also, just by chance, purely for dramatic effect as you’d find in the movies, there was a major thunder storm brewing further south and we saw some lightening strike across the sky, too!

Later at the 50th birthday party, there was a Mariachi band — it was quite the day for me!

Days ago, I had no idea that Point Roberts even existed. It never occurred to me that I’d actually go to those sandy cliffs myself someday. I just admired the cliffs from afar for the last 22 years.

And then through no conscious effort on my part, no force, no ego, and no wheeling and dealing, I went there in person anyway!

Sandy Cliffs in Point Roberts, Washington

It’s the magic of coaching! One day you’re staring off into the distance, dreaming about something with no agenda or attachment, and the next day you’re experiencing it for real!

I think that’s so cool and I just had to share this update with you.

Have you ever had a mystical experience that you can’t explain? I’d love to hear about it. Please send me an email and let’s make an appointment to chat.

In the meantime, embrace the mystic — it’s all around us!

Coaching is a Creating Conversation

by Maria Koropecky, Ammolite Wellness Coach

What do you want to create in your life?

When I first discovered that creativity is at the heart of coaching, I lit up!

I like to think of wellness coaching as a forward-thinking conversation where you have the opportunity to paint a vivid picture in your imagination of what you want to experience…

And then… somehow… through the magic of the Universe and your own effort and allowing, you’re able to watch your idea come to life in your current reality!

It’s truly an amazing feeling to step inside a real life version of what you first saw in your mind’s eye in your coaching conversation.

To illustrate the coaching process, here’s a clip from the movie, Elizabeth the Golden Age: The New World, where Sir Walter Raleigh describes the New World to Queen Elizabeth I.

Sir Walter Raleigh describes his Imagined Future to Queen Elizabeth I in the movie, Elizabeth the Golden Age: The New World.

[from minute 01:27]

SWR: Can you imagine what it is to cross an ocean? For weeks you see nothing but the horizon, perfect and empty. You live in the grip of fear, fear of storms, fear of sickness on board, fear of the immensity. So, you must drive that fear down deep into your belly. Study your chance. What’s your compass? Pray for a fair wind… and hope. Pure, naked, fragile hope.

[interruption]

QE: Let them wait. Go on Mr. Raleigh, you were hoping?

SWR: At first it’s no more than a haze on the horizon… so you watch. You watch. Then it’s a smudge, a shadow on the far water for a day, for another day. The stain slowly spreads along the horizon taking form until on the third day, you let yourself believe. You dare to whisper the word, “land.” Life, life, resurrection, the true adventure coming out of the vast unknown, out of the immensity into new life. That, your Majesty, is the New World.

QE: I like your immensities. Your ocean is an image of eternity. Such great spaces make us small. Do we discover the new world, Mr. Raleigh, or does the new world discover us?

SWR: You speak like a true Explorer.

What’s on your horizon? Photo by Maria Koropecky

Each day brings us a fresh chance to create and discover a new world!

So… I’m going to ask you again… “What do you want to create in your life?”

9 Tips to Minimize Jet Lag

by Maria Koropecky, Ammolite Wellness Coach

I’ve got travel on my mind! I’m heading to Spain in September to walk the Camino and I thought it would be nice to write a blog post on how to minimize jet lag.

The formal name for Jet lag is “desynchronosis” which is a fancy way of saying, “out of sync” which makes sense. It’s also called “flight fatigue.”

Don't let jet lag keep you grounded.

Wherever you travel, don’t let jet lag keep you grounded!

Jet Lag is not fun. Thank goodness it’s only temporary! This sleep disorder happens when our body’s natural circadian rhythms aren’t matching up with the local time and the delay can feel quite debilitating.

Symptoms of Jet Lag include:

  1. fatigue
  2. digestive disorders such as constipation, diarrhea, and nausea
  3. dehydration
  4. anxiety
  5. disorientation, confusion, and inability to concentrate
  6. dizziness and grogginess
  7. headache
  8. irritability
  9. sweating
  10. general malaise
  11. mild depression
  12. insomnia, disrupted sleep, and irregular sleep patterns

Depending on whether you’re heading West or East and the time of day you’re travelling, it takes about one day for each time zone you’ve crossed to realign your body clock to your new (or regular) time zone.

Although some jet lag is unavoidable while traveling great distances by airplane, it’s still possible to keep disruption to a minimum and get the circadian rhythms humming again sooner rather than later.

9 Tips to Minimize Jet Lag

#1 Stay Hydrated

Cabin air can be very dehydrating and being dehydrated is already uncomfortable. Symptoms from dehydration overlap with symptoms of jet lag and you don’t want to amplify your jet lag by starting off as weak and dehydrated.

So, even if you don’t feel thirsty, drink at least one glass of water for every hour you’re in the air. Also, avoid drinking too much caffeine or alcohol during your flight.

#2 Use Ginger

Ginger is good for nausea and headaches so if you can, bring some ginger essential oil with you (perhaps in a pump spray bottle), or drink ginger ale or ginger tea, or eat some Sushi with pickled ginger before your flight at the airport.

#3 Consider Melatonin

To ease your transition to the new time zone and to reset your body clock, consider taking melatonin, either as a nonprescription drug or from a food source like cherries.

#4 Try Reflexology

Speaking of melatonin, you can also use Reflexology to stimulate the production of this sleep-regulating hormone by applying pressure to the Pineal gland points on your hands, feet, or ears.

To work this reflexology point on the feet, use your index finger and press in and down on the outside edge (or medial side) of your big toe, just above the midway bump at the base of the nail.

#5 Get some pre-flight Wellness Coaching

If you’re feeling anxious about flying and are a nervous traveller, book a session with a wellness coach like me before your trip. A coach can be very calming and reassuring.

On top of that, voicing your concerns and imagining a smooth flight without any complications, including jet lag, ahead of time, will also work wonders.

#6 Wear Gemstone Jewellery

Travellers have been carrying healing crystals for their protective and healing properties on their journeys for thousands of years. Wearing gemstone and crystal jewellery is an excellent and easy way to ensure a safe and pleasant voyage. Crystal jewellery also looks nice and makes a great conversation starter.

  • I recommend Turquoise to safeguard your possessions and to facilitate communication
  • Yellow Jasper to calm nausea or motion sickness
  • Silvery-black Hematite to help get rid of let lag.
  • Of course, there’s also the perfectly-named Jet stone which offers protection, helps clear negativity, and brings good luck.
Crystals for Jet Lag.
Crystals for Jet Lag. Photo by Maria Koropecky, Ammolite Wellness Coach.

#7 Get Up & Stretch

Every few hours, take about 15 minutes to stretch your muscles from head to toe. Roll your neck, shoulders, wrists, and ankles and twist at your waist from side to side. All the better if you practice yoga.

You can stretch while seated of course, but it’s even better when you get up midflight and walk up and down the aisle a few times to get your circulation going and stretch while standing up.

#8 Go Outside When You Can

Once you arrive, spend time outside in nature and then you’ll receive natural cues from the environment that will help your body reset itself to your new surroundings.

Also, if you happen to catch some rays, you’ll also get some Vitamin D which will help boost your immunity.

#9 Get a Massage

I recommend getting a massage to minimize the amount of time it takes to recover from jet lag. Nowadays, you can get a chair massage at the airport or you can book a more extravagant massage at a spa at your destination. Either way, a massage will help you release tension and sleep better at night.

I hope these 9 tips will help you reduce and even avoid jet lag on your next trip. And if you have any tips to share, feel free to add your comments about minimizing jet lag below. Thanks!

I Love Myself, Therefore…

by Maria Koropecky, Ammolite Wellness Coach

Several years ago around 2005, I was working as a housekeeper at a fancy B&B and I started to develop a sore shoulder from vacuuming too much. Occupational hazard, I guess. 🙂 The dull ache was interfering with my availability for work, so I went to see a healer called Magdalena.

Magdalena introduced me to energy healing and come to think of it, I haven’t had any problems with my shoulder since.

I remember after my visit with Magdalena, she read Louise Hay’s “Self Love Affirmation” to me and I have re-read the words and have thought about what self love looks like many times over the years.

I Love Myself, Therefore

Deep at the center of my being, there is an infinite well of love.
I now allow this love to flow to the surface. It fills my heart, my body, my mind, my consciousness, my very being, and radiates out from me in all directions and returns to me multiplied. The more love I use and give, the more I have to give. The supply is endless. The use of love makes me feel good, it is an expression of my inner joy.
I love myself; therefore, I take loving care of my body. I lovingly feed it nourishing foods and beverages, I lovingly groom it and dress it, and my body lovingly responds to me with vibrant health and energy.
I love myself; therefore I provide for myself a comfortable home, one that fills all my needs and is a pleasure to be in. I fill the rooms with the vibration of love so that all who enter, myself included, will feel this love and be nourished by it.
I love myself; therefore I work at a job I truly enjoy doing, one that uses my creative talents and abilities, working with and for people I love and who love me, and earning a good income.
I love myself; therefore, I behave and think in a loving way to all people for I know that that which I give out returns to me multiplied. I only attract loving people in my world, for they are a mirror of what I am.
I love myself; therefore I forgive and totally release the past and all past experiences and I am free.
I love myself; therefore I live totally in the now, experiencing each moment as good and knowing that my future is bright and joyous and secure, for I am a beloved child of the Universe and the Universe lovingly takes care of me now and forever more.
And so it is.

~ Louise Hay, You Can Heal Your Life

Thank you, Louise Hay. There’s so much around self love to explore including:

  • self care
  • self acceptance
  • self worth
  • self esteem
  • self respect
  • self compassion
  • self healing
  • self forgiveness
  • self talk
  • giving thanks
  • being present, and
  • divine love.

What would it be like if you were to feel incredibly loving toward yourself?

One day I asked myself this question in my journal and this is the answer I received:

Show up and dance with me!

What if I felt like I AM an empowered woman of the Universe, standing strong and wise, first? What if I presented myself as a whole being, fully and completely loving, trusting, and accepting myself in this grande Universe now?

I’d be smiling. I’d be taking action steps from a place of strength and power. I’d feel lighter. I’d trust myself and my footing, I’d trust the moment, I’d trust my partner, and I’d trust the music that surrounds us and is within us. That would be amazing!

OK. Let’s be amazing!

Maria Koropecky, Ammolite Wellness Coach

Self love is a radical concept!

In my experience, people have been talking about self love for years, but I’d like to put my own spin on it. It’s not enough to know about self love; now’s the time to actually feel it for yourself.

So how do you go about loving yourself and how do you know you love yourself?

I used to find it hard to believe myself when I said to myself, “I love you, Maria.”

I also didn’t acknowledge or even remember all of the things I did that would be considered acts of self love, like

  • leaving an unhealthy situation, or
  • writing in my journal, or
  • paying my bills on time, or
  • choosing wholesome, organic vegetables over potato chips, or
  • not putting poison into my body like cigarette smoke or alcohol, or
  • putting on sunscreen before I walk outside, or
  • any number of seemingly little things that add up over time.

I couldn’t quite feel the love even though I had been taking pretty good care of myself.

Then something clicked! I realized I wasn’t using my own personal love language!

You’re probably familiar with the book, “The Five Love Languages: How to Express Heartfelt Commitment to Your Mate” (1992) by Gary Chapman.

As a refresher, Gary Chapman’s, 5 Love Languages that help people express and experience love are:

  1. receiving gifts
  2. quality time
  3. words of affirmation
  4. acts of service, and
  5. physical touch.

How do you like to show your love to the people and animals in your life? Your go-to’s are a clue about how you can show love towards yourself and receive the message loud and clear!

I think revisiting “5 Love Languages” is a good place to start but this time, instead of expressing them to others, try applying them to yourself.

That’s what I did and you know what I figured out? My personal love language doesn’t exactly fit in any of these five categories. (I left a clue in my journal entry above about what my love language is).

Sure, I’m able to give and receive love by giving my time, energy, healing touch, or words of encouragement to myself and others, but what I personally really respond to is music!

Jazzercise front row center.

I love to sing and dance and I’ve had a soundtrack playing in the background of my life since day one with my mother singing to me.

I especially love it when I hear a song on the radio that speaks to whatever is going on in my life, as if angels were giving me a special message.

I didn’t realize how much I enjoyed singing and dancing until this past Easter when my sister-in-law, Veronica, and I had an impromptu, sing-a-long, karaoke (of sorts) evening together.

She was outside on the deck and I joined her. I started humming a tune and she asked, “What are you singing?”

Then she looked the lyrics up online and before we knew it, we downloaded a 1970’s-80’s playlist and were singing all kinds of songs including, Air Supply’s, “I’m all out of love” and Queen’s, “Bohemian Rhapsody.”

So fun!

We danced and sang at the top of our lungs and I pretended the trees were our audience. Any inhibitions I may have had blew away with the wind!

We didn’t care what the rest of the family was thinking or if the neighbours were bothered. It was truly a liberating and healing experience!

Thanks, Veronica for playing along! I’ll cherish that memory of us singing together for the rest of my life!

These days, music, singing, and dancing are the best ways for me to communicate straight to my own heart and actually feel love towards myself. It’s my way of giving and receiving love and feeling love from the inside out!

So, if I’m ever feeling low or discouraged, I sing my heart out! Singing songs allows me to feel the love and once again, I know deep down in my heart that I love myself unconditionally.

I am lovable and worthy.
“I am lovable & worthy.” Photo by Maria Koropecky, Ammolite Wellness Coach.

Once I started singing outloud and dancing like when I was 6 years old, the more I began release some pent up emotions and to love myself on a deeper level.

No matter how you approach it, loving yourself is a powerful source for good! You have to love yourself first before you can truly enjoy the blessings of life.

If you don’t love yourself first from the inside out, you will have trouble creating what you want, and if you do find some success, you will not feel fulfilled.

Don’t settle for a dull, ho hum, or uninspired existence.

Remember to love yourself first!

If you’d like to know the best recipe for an amazing life,

  • contemplate the idea of self love,
  • communicate to yourself in your own love language, and
  • love yourself wholeheartedly!

And on that note, I’d like to add to Louise Hay’s lyrics from above:

I love myself; therefore, I sing and dance to my heart’s content!

How about you? Do you like music as much as I do? Do you have a favourite song that always lifts your spirits? Let us know in the comments!

Bonus Journaling Prompt

Bonus Journal Prompt.

We often forget the nice things we do for ourselves each day.

To keep the well of self love topped up and to remind yourself that you’re lovable, worthy, and enough just as you are right now, with or without this, that, or the other, consider exploring the topic of self love in your journal (along with your gratitudes, if you want).

Loving yourself has to come from you, for you – not from anyone outside of you.

Make the decision to know you accept yourself just as you are without looking to anyone else for validation, permission, or approval.

Keeping a journal of your self love journey is a sign of a healthy person. Journalling is not about beating yourself up for making mistakes, or complaining about the people in your life or what’s not working.

Part of loving yourself means building a positive case for yourself. You can start collecting evidence that you’re a wonderful and amazing person by recording all of the lovely things you do each day.

I know there’s something that you’ve done today already that is sweet and generous. The next time you catch yourself doing something kind and loving toward yourself, “Say, I’m going to put that in my journal!”

Each day in your journal, start with, “I love myself for…”

Like: “I love myself for taking the stairs instead of the elevator today.”
Or, “I love myself for the witty comment I said at work and everyone burst our laughing.”
Or, “I love myself for listening to my intuition.”

It all counts!

Add gratitudes to your list and you’re off to the races! Green lights all the way!

Keep a running list in your journal of positive things about yourself, such as favours you’ve done, positive qualities you have, and things you like about yourself and then you can refer to your list anytime you need a little boost in your self esteem.

The beauty is, eventually, you won’t need to find more reasons to love yourself and you’ll naturally reach a point where you’ll simply say, “I Love Myself.”

It’s Not Just About The Weight

by Maria Koropecky, Ammolite Wellness Coach

I know I’ve been talking a lot about my success with Intermittent Fasting lately and how I’ve been steadily losing extra body weight for the last few months.

Getting ready to run outside. Photo by Henry Geddes, Burst

But today I’d like to take this wellness topic from a different angle — namely the bathroom scale doesn’t tell the full story and my wellness coaching is not just about losing weight.

The bathroom scale is just one indicator of your overall health.

Aside from what the bathroom scale says, your efforts to improve your health may be showing up in other ways. Perhaps since you’ve started being more proactive about your health…

  • you’re feeling more confident and outgoing,
  • your clothes are fitting better,
  • you have more energy,
  • you’re sleeping better,
  • you have stronger muscles,
  • someone has noticed your efforts and gave you a compliment,
  • you’re getting along with your friends, family, and co-workers better these days.

For me, on top of shedding extra pounds that I gained from emotional eating over the last couple of years, now my skin in clearer, my hair is softer, my eyes are brighter, I fit into a smaller pant size, and I’m able to run outside for 27 minutes without stopping!

If you’re also experiencing any of these benefits as you’re making better choices for yourself, good for you!

Health and wellness is not just about the weight. Health and wellness is about feeling good about yourself!

As an Ammolite Wellness Coach, I sincerely want to help people feel stronger, wiser, more vibrant, and more empowered than ever before!

Remember: you are not a number. You are not your body weight.

And on that note, you’re not a pant size, hair colour, marital status, or dietary preference, or any other label you can think of. You are a real human being with all kinds of wonderful qualities to celebrate!

Health experts are now recommending keeping weight checks to a minimum, perhaps stepping on the scale as infrequently as once a week.

Body weight can fluctuate for many reasons like:

  • recent intake of salty foods,
  • recent intake of heavy, starchy, high carb foods,
  • recent intake of alcohol,
  • recent vigorous workout,
  • current level of hydration,
  • where you are in your menstrual cycle,
  • the weather,
  • time of year,
  • time of day, etc. etc.

And the calibration of the bathroom scale itself can also make a difference!

Sunbeam Vintage Bathroom Scale.
See, this scale isn’t even accurate to begin with! — Photo by Wellness Coach Maria Koropecky

Take for example, the above photo of this vintage Sunbeam bathroom scale — it doesn’t even start at zero!

It’s time to rethink our relationship with bathroom scales. They may not be so useful after all.

Bathroom scales are great when you’re making progress towards your goals but what if you’ve hit a plateau or if you’ve started going in the opposite direction of your goals?

Often times, the numbers on the scale are discouraging and they just make us feel bad about ourselves.

But seeing high numbers is not the time to throw in the towel!

While some people use bathroom scales for motivation to lose weight or gain weight, consider working with a Wellness Coach to help you stay on track with your wellness goals instead!

We can figure out ways to get through those rough patches together!

If you Constantly Weigh Yourself…

Living by what the scale says on any given day is a slippery slope.

Weighing yourself every day and being overly concerned with your body weight can lead to:

  • obsessing about food,
  • eating disorders,
  • poor body image,
  • binge eating,
  • starvation,
  • dehydration,
  • poor nutrition,
  • low self esteem,
  • unnecessary stress,
  • passing on the limiting beliefs to your children,
  • too many clothes in your closet that you don’t wear, and
  • missing out on social occasions because you don’t want to be tempted to overindulge.

I don’t think it’s worth all of the fuss with weighing yourself everyday because numbers on the bathroom scale don’t tell the full story.

A Little Experiment

A few years ago, I was weighing myself everyday on a digital scale. I noticed that my weight would be lower in the mornings and higher in the late afternoons.

Also, if I didn’t like the number, all I had to do was press a few buttons and fiddle with the settings on my scale and my weight would fluctuate up to 3 pounds within a few minutes. I’d often take the best out of 3 measurements that were all over the map.

One time, I did an experiment and I weighed myself before my shower and again just after my shower just to see what would happen.

Guess if my weight changed at all.

To my surprise, I actually lost weight after my shower! So much for being water-logged.

It just goes to show that the numbers on the scale don’t really mean that much.

How to Measure your Progress without a Bathroom Scale

Start by being kind to yourself and practice self-compassion. Focus on what you want to create for yourself and be grateful for everything you can think of!

Judging yourself or comparing yourself to other people or even your younger self isn’t helpful.

The numbers on the bathroom scale don’t tell the full story by far!

Don’t let a few pounds or kilos here and there ruin your day or your new lifestyle!

Meanwhile, think about making an appointment with me, Maria, Ammolite Wellness Coach. You might be amazed at your results!

And for everyone out there who is working your asses off 🙂 congratulations for being more proactive about your health!

Neurological Wellness Association is growing across our country. Our intention is to create an alternative health services network for all Canadians to use.

NWA started in British Columbia in 2010. Initially the purpose of this group was to help promote the value of nutritional therapy for people who were living with neurological conditions but we’ve since found there’s a growing need in other areas as well.

We feel any service that has a health benefit for a person in need should be available. So, now there’s a health services network to fund services that aren’t on the government’s list.

When "I" is replaced with "we" even illness becomes wellness.

How the NWA Works

Health service providers in the network offer a discount on their services, typically this discount is 25%. That discount is available to any member of our service. People with resources pay $50 per year to join, people without recourses do not pay.

Individuals who are living with a serious medical condition can apply for funding for their chosen service, if they cannot afford the costs beyond the discount.

The approved funding can be anywhere from 5%-95% of the total cost of treatment, with the larger subsides going to the people in the most need. To date, subsides as large as $25,000 or as small as $7 have been covered.

Ammolite Wellness Coaching Wellness Coach & Mobile Spa Therapist Victoria Ammolite Wellness Coaching Wellness Coach & Mobile Spa Therapist Victoria

NWA will do what we can for any person regardless of diagnosis and we offer services as common as dental, counselling, or naturopathic visits. We also provide services that are uncommon such as metaphysical healers. Our role is to provide people with options and when a person decides to act, our role is to fund that person appropriately.

For more information on getting funding for alternative health treatments in Canada, please visit www.wellnessassociation.org.

I sincerely hope you look into NWA to help cover your wellness coaching sessions with me.

I’m looking forward to hearing from you! Maria

My Thoughts on “Footprints: The Path of Your Life” Movie

by Maria Koropecky, Ammolite Wellness Coach

I’ve just realized that in two short months, I’ll be flying to Spain to walk the Camino. There’s still so much to do to prepare!

"Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you've imagined," Henry David Thoreau

Although I’m not yet physically on the trail, I feel I’ve already started my pilgrimage.

I’ve been talking with many people who have already walked the Camino and on Monday, perhaps the first person to plant the seed of going on this journey for me, one of my friends, Alexander, came over to watch the movie, “The Way” with me and my mom.

My mother had also invited Caroline, who had also walked the Camino, and Peter and his mother, who were interested in seeing the movie.

Well, somehow, we had gotten off to a rough start. We couldn’t get the DVD player to work and once we put the disc into an old laptop, not everybody could hear the dialogue and see the screen. Our old technology just wasn’t working and it was an exercise in frustration!

Finally, we decided to switch gears and watch another movie on the same subject on Netflix called, “Footprints: The Path of Your Life.”

Footprints is a documentary that follows a group of 10 men while they walk the Camino de Santiago with their Parish Priest.

I suppose fighting with the technology and then figuring out that we could watch another movie on another platform was a lesson in not forcing something to go in a certain way and letting another option – a better one – emerge instead.

Once we made that choice, the energy in the room calmed down somewhat.

As it turned out, Footprints was actually the better choice for us to watch because it was more “realistic” of what I could expect on my journey, according to Alexander and Caroline.

In the beginning, each of the men were really struggling with their own fears and challenges and sadly, a few of the men in the group had to bow out and leave early.

That’s what happens with any new, ambitious project – stuff comes up. We have all of the best of intentions but somehow, all of this emotional baggage that has been buried deep down over a lifetime, gets stirred up. That’s the struggle! It’s how we deal with all our stuff that we’ve collected over the years that will make our break us.

The fear and the obstacles are saying, “I know you want to get to Santiago de Compostela, [for example] but here’s what you have to deal with first, and once you face this garbage head on and clear it out of the way, the world will be your oyster and you can be, do, or have whatever you want!”

For some of the men in the movie, it was too much too soon. The stuff that came up for them was too much to bear. I know they gave it their best and it wasn’t an easy decision to make to not finish. I hope they have a chance to try again and succeed.

But after a couple of weeks and many miles under their belts, the remaining men got a rhythm and got stronger.

By the end of their 500 mile, 40-day journey, they were laughing and dancing and walking barefoot! It was beautiful to watch the men go through their spiritual transformation!

I think the turning point occurred for the group after they saw the cross of Jesus with their own eyes – which would have been amazing! – and then suddenly the men were inspired to work together as a group, not letting the weakest fall behind.

That’s the choice we all have – either we continue to carry our heavy baggage that is weighing us down and give up on our dreams, or we face our challenges and let them go and leave them at the side of the road and move on and help others along their way as well.

Going on a pilgrimage gives us the opportunity to release our rocks and burdens, once for all!

And in the same spirit, working with a Wellness Coach like me would also be valuable.

Both coaching and pilgrimages open up new options that we may not have seen before (like watching a different movie at the last minute like we had) and give us the chance to make new choices and start fresh.

If we can make it through that initial turbulence and interference, we’ll be stronger for the rest of the journey.

That’s where the expression, “what doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger” comes from!

And with wellness coaching, there’s extra support during the rough patches so you don’t have to travel alone.

Have you ever noticed that fear is built into interference? Some people let the fear interfere and stop them from experiencing a blissful miracle because whatever came up was just too much. The turbulence was too scary and the plane was shaking too hard!

Meanwhile, other people on the same flight will just push through and keep going and make it through with flying colours.

Man jumping fence.

So I asked myself, “What kind of person am I?” Will I let fear stop me in my tracks as I’m attempting a challenging leg on my journey? Will I let those excuses block my path and give me an out to turn around and go home?

Or will I rise to the challenge and dig deep and keep moving?

That’s why I think the pilgrimage has already started for me. The more emotional baggage I can release before I physically set foot on the Camino, the easier and the lighter the walk will be.

I’m not going to let potential turbulence keep me from getting on that flight or let fear stop me from living my best life!

Buen Camino, Maria

Why Ammolite Inspires Me!

by Maria Koropecky, Ammolite Wellness Coach

I’m wearing my Ammolite ring as I write this post.

Ammolite ring with angel.
Can you see the angel in the Ammolite? Photo by Maria Koropecky, Ammolite Wellness Coach.

I love my Ammolite ring because I feel I was in the flow state when I bought it.

I went to a Gem Show a couple of years ago at the Pearkes Recreation Centre in Saanich, BC. I remember when I first entered the space on the Saturday morning in August, the room was just buzzing! All of the people were in good spirits and it was as if all of the gemstones and crystals were waking up!

I didn’t know what I was looking for exactly at the Gem Show so I just kept my mind open to whatever jumped out at me. When I go to these types of shows, I like to start at one end and go through all of the booths, one by one, in order, all around the large room to see everything available before I make any decisions.

Somewhere in the middle of the room, there was a man selling loose, polished Ammolite gemstones for custom jewellery.

I’d heard about Ammolites before from my friend who wore her Ammolite necklace one day and I asked her about it because it was so colourful, unique, and lovely.

She said it’s from Alberta and she bought her jewell as a present for herself for her 50th birthday!

I made a note of the name, Ammolite, for future reference.

Meanwhile, before I left for the gem show, my mother had given me a gold ring that didn’t have any stone in it to see if I could find something for it. She said it used to have an unknown pink stone in it but when she had it cleaned, sadly, the pink crystal disintegrated! Afterwards, the naked ring sat in her jewellery box for years, waiting for a second chance to shine.

The gold ring itself has its own history. According to my mother, her parents somehow procured the ring while they were living in a displaced persons camp in Austria in the 1940’s while they were en route to immigrate to Canada.

So, my gold ring is an antique and has an ancestral tie to my family and I’m grateful for the sacrifices my grandparents made to ensure future generations (i.e. me) could lead a better life.

By the way, because Ammolite is from pre-historic times, it also symbolizes our ancestors!

Anyway, I showed the gold ring to the Ammolite sales rep/jeweller. He thought he might be able to help me find something suitable.

As we were looking at the different configurations and narrowing down the options, it seemed like the noise around us in the big room hushed and I lost track of time. I was in the zone.

We looked for colours, shape, and size, and I trusted his recommendations. Together, we found a beautiful square-shaped cut that has all of the colours of the rainbow in a pleasing pattern!

But would it fit? What if it cracks? What if the prongs that hold it in place snap off? The pressure to marry the two pieces together was on!

I held my breath and stared at the ring and the jeweler’s nimble hands as he fastened everything in place!

And then it happened! Everything came together beautifully!

The Ammolite jeweller carefully inserted the delicate Ammolite gemstone into to gold ring setting. He gently folded the prongs down to secure the stone in place and voila! A new ring was born!

Exhale!

I put my new Ammolite ring on my finger and beamed with delight!

Not only does my Ammolite ring connect me to my grandparents, it also taught me a valuable lesson about how creativity and manifestation work.

Earlier, I said I felt like I was in the flow state while I was buying this ring and I meant that I just let things unfold in their own way without trying to force my ego, or try to control the details, or insist on my own agenda.

I just played it by ear and followed my nose and let whatever wanted to emerge to show up. Not always easy!

I felt like I was trusting my intuition as I followed the metaphorical breadcrumbs, and somehow I managed to create this beautiful and powerful Ammolite ring for myself.

The next time you have an opportunity to bring different worlds together and create something new that never existed before, I hope you feel inspired by my Ammolite ring story.

Ammolite inspires me because it’s a natural miracle. The events that were set in motion millions of years ago, that had to take place in order for me to wear this ring today on my finger, are beyond incalculable. It’s literally the impossible becoming possible!
